"I was carrying my phone in my hand while I was walking around numb and just worrying," McGraw said. "Then they called and said Dev was going to be OK. When they called Sunday morning and said that Dev was going to be practicing again, I was running for champagne."

South Bend Tribune - After a hectic July spent criss-crossing the country recruiting and a busy first week of August spent working on women's basketball committees, Notre Dame women's basketball coach Muffet McGraw thought she might get a chance to catch her breath with a relaxing weekend.

But a phone call from Denver, where the USA women's basketball team was practicing in preparation for the World University Games that start in China on Sunday, had McGraw facing a full-court stress.

McGraw found out that Devereaux Peters, one of three Notre Dame players on the USA Team, suffered a knee injury during practice with the USA Team in Denver.

Having lost Peters - a 6-foot-2 senior who emerged as a huge contributor in Notre Dame's run to the national championship game last season - most of two seasons already because of two different knee injuries, McGraw feared the worst. After a stressful day waiting to hear the results of Peters' MRI, McGraw finally heard that Peters was all right, and would be cleared to rejoin the team and practice this week.

"It was such a huge roller-coaster weekend," McGraw said. "It was great to hear the good news. I was so anxious to hear from them. That was a rough weekend waiting to hear.

"I got a call from Carol Callan, who is the head of USA Basketball, so you have an immediate worry," McGraw said of how the weekend stress test started. "You know something is wrong. It happened Friday night. My phone was off, and I didn't even rush to my phone Saturday morning. I finally got it at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. Carol said, 'Here's what happened. Dev tweaked her knee. Don't worry yet. She's at the doctor right now. We'll find out later. We're going to get an MRI.'"

McGraw waited about eight hours before finding out some news about Peters.

"I was carrying my phone in my hand while I was walking around numb and just worrying," McGraw said. "Then they called and said Dev was going to be OK. When they called Sunday morning and said that Dev was going to be practicing again, I was running for champagne."
