The Mid February Report

Feb. 17, 2017

February 17, 2017 -

Notre Dame hoops is only two weeks away from March Madness, aka the most wonderful time of year (besides Christmas) and the rest of the Spring sports are just getting started.

As if four games a week, two from women and two from men's basketball, isn't enough add hockey, softball, men's and women's lacrosse, baseball, tennis and track into the equation.

While this is only my second semester working at Notre Dame, I've noticed that there is never a dull moment in Notre Dame Athletics.

For example, ND Lacrosse Pre Season All-American Midfielder, Sergio Perkovic, scored a goal at halftime of ND Hockey vs. Vermont. Yeah you read that correctly, a lacrosse player nailed a goal on his first try and won a fan a free flight.

Almost every university has around 26 varsity sports but not all of them excel in multiple sports, outside of football and basketball, and receive lots of national attention.

After Nathan Richartz came in first in the annual Meyo Invitational, Notre Dame Track and Field went to Clemson for the Paw Invitational where he broke his own school record (previously 5.46m) and tied the seventh-best height in the country with a 5.50m mark in the pole vault. Obviously, that was enough for him to earn ACC Men's Field Performer of the Week.

No. 10 Notre Dame Women's Lacrosse is 3-1 to start the season and their most recent victory over Marquette made Sports Center Top 10 after this goal by Grace Muller.

Let's not forget about No. 4 Notre Dame Men's Lacrosse who will open up their season against Georgetown in Dallas Texas......(wait for it) inside the newly constructed Dallas Cowboys' training $1.5 billion training facility. Talk about a cool venue to play in.

Notre Dame Softball also opened their season style with a West Coast trip to California, just days after Senior captain midfielder, Karley Wester, was named to the Top 50 US Softball Player of the Year Watch List for the third straight year. Wester was first named to the list as a sophomore and was a top 26 finalist and last year she was a top 10 finalist.

Brace yourselves, I realized that was a lot but the best is yet to come. The Spring season of Fighting Irish Sports is just getting started and there will be more where this came from.

Check out my podcast with Wester where she talks about her recent honors and awards, the trip to California, Wester Sisters: Into Focus and more.
