Historic Irish Track & Field Weekend

Feb. 24, 2017

February 24, 2017 - What a time to be alive.

I am thrilled to be able to witness some program firsts during my tenure as the Notre Dame Sports Blogger.

For the first time in program history, Notre Dame Track & Field is hosting the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.

You would think Notre Dame would’ve hosted the championship sooner considering Loftus Sports Center has the largest indoor track (320-meters) in the country, but I’m glad it didn’t happen until now so I could witness it.

Outside of the national attention being drawn to the university with live coverage of the meet, this is a wonderful opportunity for the Irish to take advantage on their home turf with Leprechaun Legion in attendance.

With February 23-25 being a rather quiet weekend at home for Notre Dame Athletics, fans will be drawn to come watch the Irish compete for individual titles as well as the overall ACC Indoor Championship title.

While the men got off to a great start Thursday night and currently rank second in the rankings, the women also made some noise and put their first points on the board after Kelly Hart, Payton Miller, Jamie Marvil and Jessica Harris won the DMR (11:02.32) and qualified for nationals. In the win, Harris, ran an unofficial 4:30 mile split, as she edged Clemson in the final steps of the race. Fun fact of the weekend, cornerback Troy Pride Jr., is the first dual sport athlete to run track since George Atkinson (2012-2013) and Josh Atkinson (2012-2014). On top of his rigorous Spring schedule, including his “Body by Balis” strength and conditioning workouts, he joined the Notre Dame Track & Field team.

You can bet that most of the football team will be in attendance to watch Pride run Friday night at 4:45 (60m) and 6:05 (200m) to qualify for the finals on Saturday.

Don’t worry if you can’t attend you can still catch the Irish in action. Tune in on the ACC Network Extra/WatchESPN on Friday from 3:30-7 p.m., and Saturday 12-4 p.m. ET.
