Three Irish Student-Athletes Named Recipients Of 2014 ACC Postgraduate Scholarship

Feb. 25, 2014

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - University of Notre Dame senior tennis players Greg Andrews (Richland, Mich.), Jennifer Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) and women's senior soccer player Elizabeth Tucker (Jacksonville, Fla.) are among 44 student-athletes who have been selected for the Weaver-James-Corrigan awards, part of the Atlantic Coast Conference's postgraduate scholarship, while men's soccer standout Harrison Shipp (Lake Forest, Ill.), also a senior, was among six individuals chosen as an honorary recipient.

The Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Andrews, Kellner and Tucker will receive $5,000 toward his or her graduate education and are honored because they have performed distinction both in the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary contact in the community.

The Weaver-James-Corrigan Award is named in honor of the late Jim Weaver and Bob James as well as Gene Corrigan, the league's first three ACACC commissioners. The 50 student-athletes will be honored at the annual ACC Postgraduate Luncheon presented by ESPN on April 16, 2014 in the Guilford Ballroom at the Sheraton Greensboro at the Four Seasons.

Andrews is a two-time captain of the Irish men's tennis team, currently ranked ninth in the country with an 11-4 dual match record. He was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year in 2011 and BIG EAST Player of the Year twice in 2012-13 before Notre Dame joined the ACC this year. Andrews helped the Irish to the BIG EAST title in as a junior and won both the singles and doubles crowns at the '13 ITA Summer Circuit Event.

Andrews is an accounting major in the Mendoza College of Business and has earned Dean's List distinction in every semester at Notre Dame. He and

As a junior, he posted a 19-8 singles record and 12-9 doubles mark. This season, he owns a 16-13 overall singles mark. He and doubles partner, Alex Lawson, currently are ranked 11th in the country.

Also a two-time captain and an accounting major in the Mendoza College of Business, Kellner twice earned all-BIG EAST honors while helping her team to three consecutive BIG EAST titles. As a junior, she was one of five Notre Dame student-athletes to receive a BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award.

During her junior season, she logged a 16-10 record at No. 2 singles in dual matches and was 13-8 with teammate Chrissie McGaffigan at No. 1 doubles. This season, she is playing in the number-three singles slot for the Irish.

Tucker, a defender and two-time tri-captain on the Notre Dame's women's soccer team, helped Notre Dame to four consecutive NCAA Championship berths during her career and was a member of the 2010 national championship squad. A Dean's List student with a 4.00-grade-point, Tucker garnered first team Capital One Academic All-America accolades in both 2012 and 2013 and is one of just 15 Irish student-athletes to earn first-team Academic All-America honors twice during their careers.

Tucker, a finalist for the 2014 Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup, appeared in 92 matches during her career, made 87 starts and finished with 19 goals and 14 assists.

Tucker has maintained a 4.000 grade-point average in the Mendoza College of Business as an accounting major, and she has earned Dean's List honors each semester at Notre Dame.

Shipp led Notre Dame the program's first-ever national championship in 2013. A forward, he played every match during his career in an Irish uniform and served as captain during his final season. He was honored as the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for men's soccer along with being named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-America Player of the Year and was recognized as the ACC Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

A first team NSCAA All-America honoree, Shipp led Notre Dame in goals (12) and assists (10) en route to garnering the ACC Offensive player-of-the-year honor. He helped the Irish to a sterling 17-1-6 record and a share of the ACC regular-season championship.

Shipp concluded his academic career with a degree in finance from the Mendoza College of Business.
