NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame has won the Capital One Cup all-sports competition on the men's side for the 2013-14 athletics year.

The Capital One Cup competition is based on top-10 finishes in a combination of NCAA brackets and final polls and recognizes the top-achieving programs in college athletics.

The Notre Dame men finished with 98.5 points--60 via the 2013 Irish men's soccer national title and resulting final poll finish, 36 based on a national runner-up finish and final poll standing in men's lacrosse in May, plus two and a half based on a sixth-place NCAA finish in fencing (points shared between the men's and women's standings).

"I am so proud to see our coaches and student-athletes reach such a milestone, and to earn the Capital One Cup for the first time ever is a great accomplishment, says Jack Swarbrick, Notre Dame's vice president and director of athletics.

Here are the final standings in the men's division: 1. Notre Dame 98.5, 2. Oregon 92, 3. Florida 86, 4. Virginia 77, 5. (tie) Florida State and USC 68, 7. Connecticut 66, 8. Duke 60.5, 9. (tie) Maryland, North Dakota State and Vanderbilt 60.

In recognition of this achievement, Capital One will present a trophy and a check for $200,000 for student-athlete scholarships to the University of Notre Dame. That presentation will be made July 16 at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles.

Grammy Award-winning, platinum-selling recording artist Drake will host The ESPYS at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, where he will be joined by top athletes and entertainers to celebrate the year's best moments in sports. The ESPYS will be televised live at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. The event raises more than $1 million annually for The V Foundation, the charity founded by the late basketball coach Jim Valvano to promote cancer research.

The Irish women finished 19th in 2013-14, thanks mostly to Notre Dame's national runner-up finish in women's basketball. Florida won the women's competition this year.

In previous Capital One Cup competitions, the Notre Dame men finished 12th in 2012-13, 26th in 2011-12 and 44th in 2010-11. The Irish women previously ended up 18th in 2012-13, 14th in 2011-12 and fifth in 2010-11.

A special recognition to honor Fighting Irish coaches and student-athletes for this award will be planned at a home football game during the 2014 season.
