    Notre Dame Seventh In Sears Directors' Cup Standings

    NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame stands seventh in the second set of fall sports standings released in the 1999-2000 Sears Directors' Cup all-sports competition.

    Thanks to the women's soccer team's NCAA runnerup finish - plus the men's cross country team finishing eighth and the women's cross country team finishing 29th at the NCAA championships, Notre Dame currently has 175 points.

    Stanford (295 points) leads the competition thanks to its NCAA runnerup finish in water polo, its third-place standing from women's cross country plus its fourth in men's cross country. Second is UCLA, followed by Michigan, North Carolina, Connecticut, Arkansas and the Irish.

    The current standings include results from NCAA competition in field hockey, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and water polo. The next set of standings will include Notre Dame's '99 NCAA tournament appearance in volleyball.

    In previous years in which the Sears Directors' Cup competition has been held, Notre Dame has finished 11th in 1993-94, 30th in 1994-95, 11th in 1995-96, 14th in 1996-97, tied for 31st in 1997-98 and 25th in 1998-99.
