Australia Rugby Visit Turns into Great Sharing of Sports Performance Practices

One of world's top rugby squads visited Notre Dame campus earlier this month.

Matthew Howley is in his fourth year at Notre Dame, and first year as Director of Sports Science. In the role as Director of Sports Science he will help devise and implement strategies for assessing and enhancing student-athlete readiness, performance and recovery as part of a comprehensive sports performance program. He will assist fellow staff members in analyzing, organizing and interpreting sports science data as it is obtained. Additionally he will serve as the point person on the identification and implementation of new sports science based technologies and software. Howley will also play a significant role in building Notre Dame's relationship with Under Armour and their sports performance department as it pertains to further developing sports science and our student-athletes.

Howley spent the previous 3 years as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of Notre Dame. During this time he implemented all strength and conditioning programs for Men's Soccer, Women's Rowing, Men's and Women's Golf and Women's Tennis.

Howley received his Bachelors degree in Exercise and Sport Science from Deakin University in 2009, and achieved his Master of Exercise Science (Strength and Conditioning) from Edith Cowan University in 2010.

Prior to coming to Notre Dame, Howley worked at the Eastern Ranges Football Club (Australian Football) as a Strength and Conditioning Coach from 2007-2009, and then was a High Performance manager from 2009-2011. Howley started at Notre Dame as an intern within the Strength and Conditioning department in 2011, and has previously volunteered as a strength and conditioning assistant at the Hawthorn Football Club (AFL).

Hailing originally from Melbourne, Australia, Howley currently resides in South Bend, Ind.
