Notre Dame Tied for 11th in Sears Directors' Cup
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame stands
tied for 11th in the latest standings in the Sears Directors'
Cup all-sports competition.
Thanks to the Irish women's soccer team reaching the national
semifinals and the men's cross country team finishing 12th at
the NCAA championship, Notre Dame currently has 80 points, as
do Dartmouth and Old Dominion.
North Carolina (200 points) leads the competition thanks to
1997 NCAA titles in women's soccer and field hockey, while
Stanford (190 points) is second after winning the NCAA men's
cross country title, taking second in women's cross country and
finishing 17th in men's soccer.
The current standings include results from NCAA competition in
men's water polo, field hockey, men's and women's cross
country and men's and women's soccer.
In the four previous years in which the Sears Directors' Cup
competition has been held, Notre Dame has finished 11th in
1993-94, 30th in 1994-95, 11th in 1995-96 and 14th in 1996-97.
Final fall standings will appear in the January 8, 1998 edition
of USA Today.
