    A Notre Dame Legend Retiring

Tony Yelovich has worked at Notre Dame for over 30 years go behind the scenes on his last event.

Tony Yelovich is in his 24th year within the Notre Dame athletics department, and his 16th as assistant athletics director with responsibility for game management. He also serves as the administrator for the women's soccer program. Yelovich moved into an administrative role in the fall of 1994 after serving on the Irish football staff for eight seasons, the final three as recruiting coordinator. Before assuming the recruiting position prior to the 1991 campaign, he spent five years coaching a variety of positions for the Irish. Yelovich began his tenure coaching the entire offensive line in 1986 and 1987, when the offensive line was voted MVP against USC by CBS. Yelovich concentrated on the guards and centers in 1988, handled receivers in 1989, and tutored the tight ends in 1990.

For all of his contributions to Notre Dame, Yelovich was given an honorary monogram by the Notre Dame Monogram Club in June of 2001.

The Paoli, Pa., native was an offensive line coach everywhere else he had been, including stints at Stanford (1984-85), Tulane (1980-83) and Arizona (1977-79). While coaching at Tennessee Tech, his team recorded a perfect 10-0 record in 1972 and played in the Grantland Rice Bowl. Among the players coached by Yelovich who went on to professional careers were: Chuck Lanza, Tim Ruddy, Tim Grunhard, Mike Heldt, Irv Smith, Derek Brown, Pete Chryplewicz, and Oscar McBride. He also coached a team of Notre Dame alumni that traveled to Hamburg, Germany, for the 2000 Charity Bowl, defeating the Hamburg Blue Devils 14-10. The All-America Football Foundation honored Yelovich in 1998 for his years of service to the game as an assistant coach.

Yelovich began his coaching career at the University of Tampa, his alma mater, as a graduate assistant during the spring of 1964. He served that season as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Seminole High School under Fred Robinson in Largo, Fla. Yelovich coached ends, linebackers and centers during the 1965 and 1967 seasons at Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa.

Yelovich graduated from Tampa in 1964 with undergraduate degrees in history and physical education. He also earned a master's degree from Truman State University in Missouri.

A four-year letterman as a center at Tampa, Yelovich captained the 1962 and 1963 Spartan squads, twice earning Little All-America honors (1962, 1963) and later being tapped as a member of the school's hall of fame. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in June 1995. In 2003, he received the Spirit Award, an award giving by the University in recognition of dedication to exceptional service which has inspired others to greater levels of achievement.

He also coached a team of former Notre Dame football players that traveled to Tokyo, Japan for the 2009 Charity Bowl. That squad defeated a Japanese All-Star Team.

In May 2011, Yelovich received the Presidential Values Award from the University; one of the highest recognitions that can be bestowed upon a Notre Dame employee.

Yelovich and his wife, Jean, are parents of two daughters, both Notre Dame graduates: Jody and Jill.
