Irish Connection returns to take you behind-the-scenes of the 2011 Notre Dame Football Awards Show - onto the stage for the preview show and the red carpet.
Erika Whitman is in her fifth year as a sports dietitian at the University of Notre Dame. She has served as the Sports Nutrition Program Director since adding another full-time sports dietitian to the staff in January 2011. Notre Dame is one of only a handful for collegiate sports nutrition programs to employ two full-time sports dietitians in their athletic departments. Whitman oversees the sports nutrition program, providing a critical role in maximizing performance levels through education, guidance and monitoring of nutrition services provided to all 26 Varsity Irish Sports, including over 700 student-athletes.
Prior to joining the Notre Dame staff in 2007, she had served since November of 2006 as coordinator of sports nutrition at the University of Florida. Before taking the post at Florida, Whitman spent three years (2003-06) as a health educator for the Health & Nutrition Technology (HNT) Program for Health and Weight Management in Indianapolis, Ind.
She also worked as a nutritionist for the Pennsylvania Nutrition Education Program (PANEP) at State College, Pa., after joining the Penn State University Sports Nutrition Clinic as a sports nutrition assistant in January of 2003.
Whitman received her bachelor's of science degree in nutrition and dietetics from the University of Delaware in May of 2002. A Dean's List student during all eight semesters and the recipient of an academic scholarship while at the University, she was one of five students selected for the Nutrition and Dietetics Panel of Distinguished Seniors in May of 2003 and received a scholarship to study in Hawaii during the summer of 2001. Following graduation, she completed an approved dietetic internship at St. Luke's Hospital-Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla.
She became a Registered Dietitian (RD) in 2003 and Board Certified with a Specialty in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) in 2008.
