Tulsa's Anoushika Van Exel posted a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win over the tournament's #8 seed, William & Mary senior Lauren Nikolaus. Four of the top eight seeds suffered upset losses Monday while two players seeded #9-#16 also failed to advance to the second round.

Stanford senior Anie Bleszynski posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Pepperdine's Karoline Borgersen before teaming with classmate Julie Scott for a 6-3, 6-0 win over Fresno State's Dora Dillanova and Liesl Fichtbauer.

William & Mary senior Michelle O rallied from a 4-0 deficit in game four to defeat Notre Dame freshman Michelle Dasso 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

University of San Diego's Zuzana Lesenarova reacts to the clinching point in her 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Stanford sophomore Anne Kremer, the tournament's #2-seeded player. Lesenarova broke Kemner's serve for a 6-5 lead and saved a break point before recording the final two points of the day's biggest upset.

#1 seed Mirela Vladulescu of Alabama-Birmingham avoided the first-round upset that claimed six of the tournament's top 16 seeds and four of the top eight, saving a second-set match point before winning 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 over Vanderbilt's Julie Ditty.

Notre Dame freshman Michelle Dasso suffered a tough 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to William & Mary senior Michelle O, despite holding a 4-0 lead in the second set. Dasso finished 30-8 for the season while earning the ITA regional rookie of the year award Sunday night.

Notre Dame senior Tiffany Gates (left) and junior Jennifer Hall rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Arizona State's Alison Nash and Celene McCoury. The Irish duo next will face in-state rival Jennifer Embry and Mary Maggart of Purdue, who upset one of the draw's top-eight seeded doubles teams: Stanford's Anne Kremer and Teryn Ashley.
