Day Two Notes
  • Three of tomorrow's semifinal participants -- Duke, Stanford and Florida -- all advanced to the semifinals of the '96 and '97 NCAA tournaments.
  • Duke is making its third consecutive semifinals appearance and fourth in school history. Duke is 0-3 in semifnal action and winless in two tries against the Cardinal. This will be the third straight year that Stanford and Duke have met in the semifinals. The Cardinal beat the Blue Devils 5-1 a year ago and 5-2 in 1996.
  • This will be the second meeting of the season for Duke and Stanford. On Feburary 22, the Cardinal handed the Blue Devils their first loss of the season (6-1) at the Rolex Team Indoors in the title match in Madison, Wisc.
  • After today's win 6-0 win against Mississippi, Duke is now 3-2 all-time against the Lady Rebels. The last time the two teams met (1993), Duke earned a 5-2 victory.
  • Duke's win over Mississippi today extended its current win streak to 14 matches. The Blue Devils have not lost since dropping a 5-1 decision to Florida in Durham, N.C. on March 22.
  • Duke is currently 26-3 on the season. With its win over the Lady Rebels, the Blue Devils established a new single-season mark, surpassing the record of 25 wins set during the 1996 campaign.
  • Duke head coach Jamie Ashworth has compiled a 38-4 mark in her two seasons as the Blue Devils head coach.
  • Georgia is back in the semifinals for the first time since 1995 when the Lady Bulldogs dropped a 5-0 decision to Florida. This is the sixth semifinal appearance for since 1987. The Lady Bulldogs captured the NCAA crown in 1994.
  • Tomorrow's Georgia-Florida semifinal matchup marks the third of the season for the two teams. Florida lead the all-time series between the two schools 27-5. The Gators beat the Lady Bulldbos 6-3 during the regular season (in Athens, Ga.) and 5-2 in the SEC tournament championship match.
  • Georgia and Florida have faced each other only once in the NCAA tournament. Their only between occurred in the semifinals of the '95 tournament with the Gators earning a 5-0 decision.
  • With its win over Wake Forest, Stanford is 16-1 overall in quarterfinal action. Stanford's only loss in the quarterfinals was to Trinity (Tex.) when the Cardinal dropped a 5-4 decision in the '85 NCAA tournament.
  • Stanford is 12-3 all-time in semifinal action. Its last loss in the NCAA semifinals was to Texas (5-1) in the '95 NCAA championship.
  • Texas concludes its season with a 23-6 record. Today's matchup with Florida was the second time this season in which the two teams faced each other. The Gators beat the Longhorns 5-1 in Gainesville, Fla. and now lead the all-time series 16-8. Last season, the Gators earned a 5-1 victory over Texas in the NCAA tournament semifinals.
  • Texas' 5-0 loss to Florida today marked the first time that the Longhorns have been shutout in an NCAA tournament match (34 matches).
  • Florida is in the semifinals for the fourth consecutive year. The last time Florida lost in the semifinals was in 1993 when the Gators dropped a 5-4 decision to Texas.
  • Wake Forest concludes its eason with an 18-9 record.
