Singles and Doubles Quarterfinals Recap - May 27, 1998

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Two more of the top four seeds fell in the singles draw leaving Duke's fourth-seeded Vanessa Webb as the remaining top seed in the draw at the 1998 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship at the Courtney Tennis Center on the campus of host University of Notre Dame. Top-seeded Mirela Vladulescu of Alabama-Birmingham fell to Stanford's Julie Scott in a tight three-set match while California's third-seeded Amanda Augustus won just one game in a loss to Stanford's Ania Bleszynski.

Florida's top-seeded and two-time defending NCAA doubles champion team of Dawn Buth and Stephanie Nickitas and the second-seeded team of Webb and Karen Goldstein both won in straight sets. Third-seeded Cristina Moros and Sandy Sureephong of Texas and fourth-seeded Bleszynski and Scott both upset.

Vladulescu, who saved match points against her in the first and third rounds, rallied once again from 3-5 in the third set before falling 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to Scott, who advanced to the semifinals for the second straight year. She will face Webb, a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Yana Dorodnova of Kansas State. The junior has yet to drop a set on her way to her first NCAA singles semifinal appearance. Scott eliminated Webb in the quarterfinals of the 1997 NCAA Championship.

Two unseeded players will meet in the semifinals for the first time as Bleszynski, a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Augustus, will face San Diego's Zuzana Lesenarova, a 6-2, 7-6 winner over Washington's seeded Kristina Kraszewski.

Buth and Nickitas won their 100th career double match and their 13th straight NCAA championship doubles matches with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Wisconsin's Barbara Urbanska and Marjon Copier. Webb and Goldstein beat Notre Dame's Tiffany Gates and Jennifer Hall 6-1, 6-2. William & Mary's Lauren Nikolaus and Michelle O won the final five games of the match for a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 win over Bleszynski and Scott. Augustus and Amy Jensen edged Moros and Sureephong 7-6, 4-6, 7-5.
