Singles and Doubles Quarterfinals Recap - May 27, 1998
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Two more of the top four seeds fell in the
singles draw leaving Duke's fourth-seeded Vanessa Webb as the
remaining top seed in the draw at the 1998 NCAA Women's Tennis
Championship at the Courtney Tennis Center on the campus of host
University of Notre Dame. Top-seeded Mirela Vladulescu of
Alabama-Birmingham fell to Stanford's Julie Scott in a tight
three-set match while California's third-seeded Amanda Augustus
won just one game in a loss to Stanford's Ania Bleszynski.
Florida's top-seeded and two-time defending NCAA doubles champion
team of Dawn Buth and Stephanie Nickitas and the second-seeded
team of Webb and Karen Goldstein both won in straight sets.
Third-seeded Cristina Moros and Sandy Sureephong of Texas and
fourth-seeded Bleszynski and Scott both upset.
Vladulescu, who saved match points against her in the first and
third rounds, rallied once again from 3-5 in the third set before
falling 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to Scott, who advanced to the semifinals
for the second straight year. She will face Webb, a 6-1, 6-3
winner over Yana Dorodnova of Kansas State. The junior has yet
to drop a set on her way to her first NCAA singles semifinal
appearance. Scott eliminated Webb in the quarterfinals of the
1997 NCAA Championship.
Two unseeded players will meet in the semifinals for the first
time as Bleszynski, a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Augustus, will face
San Diego's Zuzana Lesenarova, a 6-2, 7-6 winner over
Washington's seeded Kristina Kraszewski.
Buth and Nickitas won their 100th career double match and their
13th straight NCAA championship doubles matches with a 6-0, 6-4
win over Wisconsin's Barbara Urbanska and Marjon Copier. Webb
and Goldstein beat Notre Dame's Tiffany Gates and Jennifer Hall
6-1, 6-2. William & Mary's Lauren Nikolaus and Michelle O won
the final five games of the match for a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 win over
Bleszynski and Scott. Augustus and Amy Jensen edged Moros and
Sureephong 7-6, 4-6, 7-5.
