Doubles Quarterfinals Quotes - May 27

Vanessa Webb and Karen Goldstein (Duke) (#2 seed), 6-1, 6-2 winners over Tiffany Gates and Jennifer Hall (Notre Dame)

Vanessa Webb:
"I think this is, by far, the best we've played this tournament. For the most part, we were in control. We volleyed really well and Karen returned well. Tiffany also volleyed well. She made some tough returns on volleys."

On the pro-Notre Dame crowd:
Vanessa Webb - "It helped us focus. We wanted to play well so the crowd couldn't get into it. If they (the crowd) see you get upset, they feed off it. We didn't want them to start (getting into it)."

Karen Goldstein - "With the crowd, it kept us from getting down. I didn't want to hear them (get excited). It forces you to play better."

Tiffany Gates and Jennifer Hall (Notre Dame), 6-1, 6-2 losers to Vanessa Webb and Karen Goldstein (Duke) (#2 seed)

Jennifer Hall:
"They are a great team. They didn't make any errors and kept the pressure on us the whole match. I felt like we both played well. We started a little slow like we did the last couple of days but overall I think we played tough."

On their run to the quarterfinals:
"It has been great, especially after the tough first day losing in the first round of singles and especially after Tiffany and I struggled a bit this year and lost in the second round last year. It was great to make it to the quarterfinals and make All-American, especially for Tiffany since she is a senior."

Tiffany Gates:
"I have to give them credit. They played really well today. We both played well too but in a match like today you just have to say good job to them."

On the end of her college career:
"I couldn't ask for it to end any more perfect beside from winning the tournament. My goal entering college was to make All-American so to make it and get a chance to play doubles with Jen is great."

Notre Dame head coach Jay Louderback

"We played really but they made no errors. If we made one or two mistakes, we lost the game. For us even to win a game we had to make no errors. Webb played well and Goldstein returned well. They didn't miss."

Dawn Buth and Stephanie Nickitas (Florida) (1 seed) 6-0, 6-4 winners over Marjon Copier and Barbara Urbanska (Wisconsin):

Stephanie Nickitas
"It was a lot harder to get it going today from not playing in the morning. I'm hurting a little bit from yesterday. I think I have a broken toe or something. Besides that I think that we played pretty well today, considering how we both feel. They changed the way they played from the first set, which made it difficult for us to finish it out."

On trying to become three-time National Champions in doubles
"I'm not going to think about it until we make it into the finals and win. That's the only time I'll let it get to me or sink in. That would be a great accomplishment it does happen. It's something you shouldn't think about, so Dawn and I will rest up and concentrate on our match tomorrow."

Dawn Buth
"We played well again today. Our first set was strong and typically you tend to slack off in the second set, which we did a little. I thought we did a good job of being aggressive and staying calm."

Amanda Augustus and Amy Jensen (California) 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 winners over Cristina Moros and Sandy Sureephong (Texas) (3 seed):

Amy Jensen - "The first set was really tight and we were down in the tiebreaker, and then we turned it around for the set. We were kind of surprised to win that because we were so evenly matched."

Amanda Augustus - "We had some chances in the second set, as we had the momentum from the first set and we let them in the match. Amy served really well in the third set, which made the difference in the match. Once she found her serve we got things settled down."

On a playing Duke's Vanessa Webb and Karen Goldstein:
Amanda Augustus - "We played them in the team indoors in February which is a bit different. We kind of know how they play, so we will have to be mentally and physically tough."

Ania Bleszynski and Julie Scott (Stanford) (4 seed) 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 3-6 losers to Lauren Nikolaus and Michelle O (William & Mary):

Ania Bleszynski - "We just didn't play well. We didn't play aggressively or do much at all. We usually don't start real quick anyways, but this is not a good team to get down to early. It was pretty big when they came back from 3-1 in the third, but we were still in the match; we just didn't get any more games.

Julie Scott - "William & Mary played tough. We were a little sluggish and weren't really ready. I think that we were a little tired after our singles. They started hitting the ball really hard in the third set, and it's really hard to reflex on shots like that. They had a good strategy, and we just broke down mentally. We lost to them earlier this year, so we knew that they were going to be tough."

Lauren Nikolaus and Michelle O (William & Mary) (5-8 seed) 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 6-3 winners over Ania Bleszynski and Julie Scott (Stanford) (4 seed):

Michelle O - "We played them once in the fall and beat them. We had no pressure, so I was excited. Our gameplan gave us both opportunities to get to the net, so that helped out a lot. We were really emotional, and that helped me a lot. We've never been in the final four before, so this is really exciting."

Lauren Nikolaus - "They were seeded ahead of us, so the pressure was on them. We had a successful gameplan and we stuck to it. We just wanted to make them play and get the ball down low. We both were really pumped, and that helped us out a lot."

On playing #1 seeds Dawn Buth and Stephanie Nickitas:
Michelle O - "We don't want to lose to them again. We just have to go out there and play smart doubles."

Lauren Nikolaus - "We played them twice this year, and each time we didn't really make them play a lot. We made a lot of unforced errors, but they are a great doubles team, and they make you play a lot of balls."
