Vanessa Webb (Duke) (4 seed), 6-3, 6-2, winner over Julie Scott (Stanford) (9-16 seed):
On difference playing Scott this year from last year's NCAA quarterfinals (a three set loss): "Last year I was coming off a shoulder injury so I wasn't hitting my forehand as well. I wasn't serving well either, missing a lot of first serves and double faulting a lot."
On the tournament: "I am playing well. This is about the best I've played all year. Especially after the team, this is about as match tough as I am going to get."
On the team's succes (2nd place in NCAA tournament) leading up to individual tournament: "You go to college for the team. If you weren't there for the team, you wouldn't go to college, you would just play. I think going to the finals and playing a tough match helped. I was in a good frame for this tournament."
On the later start time (1 p.m. as opposed to 9 or 10 a.m.): "It really didn't make too much of a difference. The sun was out of my eyes, and it was nice to sleep a little later."
On Ania Bleszynski (opponent in finals): "I think we're similar in that we both have good serves. But other than that, we play differently. She has a two-handed backhand and I hit a one-handed backhand. She likes to play from the baseline, and I like to be at the net."'
On practicing after matches: "If I don't think I hit a shot crisply in the match, I like to practice it so I can visualize making the shot when I go home at night. If I can see myself making a shot, I know I can do it the next day."
Julie Scott (Stanford) (9-16 seed) 3-6, 2-6 loser to Vanessa Webb (Duke) (4 seed):
"I knew how she played; I was familiar with her game. Today the wind helped her out a lot because she uses a lot of off-pace balls. With swirling winds and high off-pace balls, it's hard to get a deep shot back. It was also hard for me to lob over her because she is so tall. When I got broken to make it 4-2 in the second, I knew that I was in trouble. She just played the better match today; she played really well."
On the tournament: "I was surprised that I got this far; there are so many good players out there. After doing well last year, there was a lot of pressure to do well this year, and everyone is out to get you. I was really happy and surprised to get this far. To get this far my senior year was really fun."
On the Ania Bleszynski vs. Vanessa Webb final: "They'll have a good match. Ania's serve is so hard to break, and if she can hold everytime, she should be in good shape. It'll also depend on the weather conditions; if it's windy, it might through Ania off, but she seems to be doing well today. Ania's a total power player, and Vanessa is a lot more finesse; it should be an interesting matchup."
Ania Bleszynski (Stanford) 6-3, 6-0 winner to Zuzana Lesenarova (San Diego):
"I think the wind help we out a little bit today, because neither one of us played exceptionally well. I think I played a lot better to win than she did, and that is why I won. She made a lot of unforced errors and I stuck to my game and was fairly consistent with it. My serve was not great, but the wind was no help to me at all. I think that Zuzana was having more trouble with her serves in the wind than I was."
On not being seeded: "No, I do not think I should have been seeded, because I was one of the last ones to get into the tournament. I played number four for the team all year so I did not get to face that many highly seeded players all year. My results do not show that I should be seed, but I think I am good enough o be seeded. I just wanted to have one last good tournament."
On what is working for her: " My serve has definitely helping me this tournament. I also think I am moving a lot better than I have in the past. I think I am relaxed and focused, and I am not getting to frustrated and I am concentrating on each point.
On being in the Final: "I am definitely surprised, but I knew I could do it. I knew that t my hard work all season would payoff and it did today."
On playing Vanessa web in the final: "I know that I hit harder than she does and she is not really a power player. Beside her size she is still pretty quick out on the court. She is also extremely mentally tough. I played her two years ago in the NCAA's and we had a really long match. I believe the last time I played her I beat 6-4 in the third set. I will adjust my game a little bit to play her, because she has a different style."
Zuzana Lesenarova (San Diego) 4-6, 0-6 loser to Ania Bleszynski (Stanford):
On the effect the wind had on her game: "I was kind of out of it today and I think I was a little out of rhythm the whole match. I played well in practice this morning, but this was disappointing how bad I played this match."
On her serve:" Most of it was the nerves I think I got really nervous out there while I was playing. I felt really tight and not loose like I should have felt. I just could not get over it and relax and play my game like I wanted to."
On the tournament: "It is great to make it this far. Last year I made it to the quarterfinals and this year I made it to the semifinals and hopefully next year I will make it to the finals. I never had a match were I played at one hundred percent, but I think that my first round match was the hardest."
