Dawn Buth and Stephanie Nickitas (Florida) (1 seed) 6-2, 6-4 winner over Lauren Nikolaus and Michelle O. (William and Mary) (5-8 seed):
Dawn Buth:
On the pressures of being the defending champions: "I think in this tournament everyone is gunning for everyone else. I do not think it is just us, because who ever we play tommorrow is going to want the title just as much as we do. The experience is good for us, because we have a feel of what it is like to play in the finals."
On their frustration when they were down 4-3: " At points like that you relly have to bare down and play your game the best possible way. I think I was a little flat today, so tommorrow I will have to play much better. During that point I knew I had to step it up to win."
Stephanie Nickitas:
On the different mind set needed for the finals: "You really do not have to play any better than you have been all season. Andy Brandi tells us all the time that if you try to play better for a big match most likely you will not play better. We have to take it like any other match point by point and hopefully you will win."
On why they work together so well: "I think that over the last to years we have really learned a lot about each others game and how we play. Our games counter each other what I do not do well she does, so as a whole package we are as good as we are.
On what will defeat them: "I think mostly it is ourselves that will beat us. Momentum shifts are ussually a cause of what we are doing more than what the other team is doing. Ther are instances where the other team will change up thier game a little bit to throw our game off, and sometimes it works others itr does not effect us. Sometimes we will get in a slump and it will last a long time. We realize tese things and hopefully it all comes together out on the court."
Lauren Nikolaus and Michelle O (William and mary) (5-8 seed) 2-6, 4-6 loser to Dawn Buth and Stephanie Nickitas (Florida) (1 seed):
Lauren Nikolaus:
"We came into this match knowing that we had nothing to lose. They have won this tournament two times before and they were expected to win this match so there was no real pressure on us to win."
Michelle O:
On their four game lead in the second set: "To me this did not matter because I knbew that they were good enough to come back and win. When I was down 6-4, 4-0, in singles I had this feeling that i just had to take things in stride as they came to me. Basically all I want to is win every game I play."
Lauren Niolaus:
On their preparation for Buth and Nickitas: "I think just playing smart doubles, and taking when you have oppurtunities take them. You have to make them think about their shot or the game will be easy for them. During the second set we started to make them think but it was not enough for us to win the set."
Michelle O:
On the difference in the game of Buth and Nickitas during the season: "they are pretty consistent on how they play. They have the same set play and the same areas where they like to serve the ball and pretty much everything else we remember from the first two times we played them. "
Vanessa Webb and Karen Goldstein (Duke) (2 seed), 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 loser to Amanda Augustus and Amy Jensen (California)
Vanessa Webb:
"I think we were just really off. They played really well, but we didn't have to make them play. You have to put the ball on the court and we didn't do that today. We didn't get our first serve in and that threw us off for a loop.
Karen Goldstein:
"After being in control for the first set, I really thought that we had them. My serve was off, which didn't help at all. They played a great game and deserved to win.
Vanessa Webb:
On the windy conditions: "You really can't blame your game on the weather, because both teams had to play in it. California adjusted to it well, which resulted in their win. Our serves and balls went long due to the wind, but California's didn't. It's really hard to blame it on something, so I won't."
Karen Goldstein:
"The weather out their made it hard for you to do the shots you normally do. I couldn't adjust well to it all day. I thought the wind picked up when the game progressed and California adjusted to it well. Give credit to Cal for making the right shots."
Amanda Augustus and Amy Jensen (California) 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 winners over Vanessa Webb and Karen Goldstein (Duke) (2 seed) (Amy Jensen unavailable for comment):
Amanda Augustus
"I think that we played really well; we started a little slow though. When you play different teams, it takes a while to figure out what works against them, and what doesn't. In the second set we mixed it up a bit and went back to our original gameplan. We didn't expect the second set to go like it did. We just wanted to keep it close and hold serve and hopefully break them. Once we got it going, we knew that if we just fought hard, things would probably go our way."
On being in the finals: "I didn't know if we were going to make it to the finals. It takes a lot of work and we weren't playing really well before the tourament, so I'm really, really happy to be playing tomorrow."
On playing Buth and Nickitas: "I don't know what to expect. We've never played them during the regular season in a college match, maybe once during the summer. We're just going to try to play our best game and just see what we can do with them."
