Postmatch Quotes
William & Mary Coach Brian Kalbas
On his team:
"We have been very resilient in the last
12 matches. We have refused to lose. Being down 3-0, you never
give these girls enough credit for how many times they just keep
coming back. I'm real proud of them."
On returning to Notre Dame:
"Winning your round of 16
match here where you played your tennis and coached with such a
legend as Bobby Bayliss means so much to me. I really appreciate
all the players of mine who worked so hard to give me this
opportunity."
William & Mary Player Annette Oosters
On her team:
"I knew that I could be close, but I knew
that if we kept fighting that we could win the match. It doesn't
matter if a couple of people don't have their best day. We
stayed loose and that was important. You see the fun of it; it's
really fun to play here. If you get tight; you're not going to
play any better, so if you just stay loose and have fun on the
court, you'll play your best."
On the crowd:
"I think a really big reason that we kept
loose was the people on the crowd who were cheering for us. That
really kept me loose. Right when we got on the court they were
cheering for us, and that helped us out a lot"
California Coach Jan Brogan
On the William & Mary:
"I think that William & Mary
competed better than we did. They're a streaky team, but they
are really gritty. We knew that they would fight us to the end.
I think that they deserved to win because they played better
today."
On California's layoff:
"I think that William & Mary
was more prepared for today in having played a regional. I was
really pleased with how we played in singles since I thought that
we might lose some of those matches. We worked really hard
during the layoff and were conditioned to play, but in such a
close match like this I think that it was to their advantage to
have played a regional."
On the match:
"We were up 4-1 in No. 2 doubles and
we've hardly lost a match at No. 2 doubles, so there was really
no excuse for us to lose at that seed. I think that we let go of
the match at No. 2 doubles. I think that was the biggest
surprise for me. I think that we kind of handed the match to
them."
