Student Athletic Trainers
Loftus Sports Medicine Center | Student Athletic Trainers | Mission Statement
Although the University of Notre Dame does not offer a degree program in athletic training, student assistants are a very important part of the sports medicine program. Student athletic trainers assist the sports medicine staff with many of the daily tasks involved in the health care of Irish student-athletes. Daily tasks of a student athletic trainer may include assisting with treatments, practice and game preparation, working practices and events and various tasks related to operation of the sports medicine facilities. Desired characteristics of a student athletic trainer include an interest in sports, good work ethic and a general positive attitude. Work hours include some nights and weekends. Interest in a career in health care is not a requirement, but often this is also an attraction. The sports medicine program covers all intercollegiate teams at Notre Dame. Student athletic trainers are expected to learn basic skills needed for the position. This is done through in-service education programs as well as interaction with the staff athletic trainers. Each fall semester there is an announced meeting for all Notre Dame freshmen interested in becoming student athletic trainers. During the freshman year, students are asked to volunteer a few hours each week. These hours are scheduled by a staff athletic trainer. Most volunteer hours are general facility assignments with some assistance at events. In the spring, freshman volunteers are utilized at spring football practice. At the conclusion of the spring semester, several students are selected to join the student athletic trainer program. Invitations are based on overall performance, completion of basic competencies and the needs of the sports medicine program. Institutional work study funds are available for student athletic trainers. For more information, please visit the official Notre Dame Student Athletic Trainers web site.
