Notre Dame Fencers have 5-0 Weekends at Duke Meet
Return to the Strip Feb. 22.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Notre Dame fencing teams continued their successful streak when they traveled to Duke University in Durham, N.C. Both the men's and women's squads went undefeated as they triumphed over Columbia, North Carolina, Air Force, Duke and Stanford. The Irish take a weekend off before returning to action on Feb. 22, at the Northwestern Meet.
Head Coach Yves Auriol: Yves Auriol is in his second season as head coach of both the men's and the women's teams. Auriol took over the men's program last season following the retirement of Mike DeCicco in 1995. Auriol found great success in his first season as head coach as the Irish placed second at the NCAA Championships in 1996. This year a determined Auriol has been practicing his fencers hard with the hope that the Irish will lay claim to the top spot when they head to Colorado Springs, Colo., and the Air Force Academy for this year's national championships. Auriol had been head coach of the women's team since 1986 and compiled a career record of 244-12 (.953) in his 10-plus seasons. He led Notre Dame's women's squad to its first-ever NCAA women's crown in 1987 and the combined title in 1994.
The Duke Meet Review: The Notre Dame men's fencing team won all five of their matches at Duke as they improved to 19-2 on the season. The Irish claimed decisive victories over Air Force (21-6) and North Carolina (23-4). Things were more competitive in the Irish victories over Columbia (18-9), Stanford (16-11) and Duke (16-11). The Irish were lead by a 12-1 showing from senior foil captain Jeremy Siek (New Market, N.H.). Sabreman Luke LaValle (New York, N.Y.) continued his stellar campaign posting a perfect 13-0 record. Carl Jackson (Ringoes, N.J.) helped the epee team by going 11-4 in competition.
After going 5-0 this weekend, Notre Dame's women's team stands at 25-1 on the season. The match against the host Blue Devils was the closest as the Irish came away with an 21-11 win. Sophomore foilist Myriah Brown (Mishawaka, Ind.) went 17-2 on the day. The epee team was lead by captain Anne Hoos (Wilmette, Ill.) and Nicole Mustilli (South Orange, N.J.) who both compiled 15-5 records. Freshman Magda Krol (Vancouver, British Columbia) fenced double duty with a 6-0 epee record and an 11-1 foil showing.
Siek Moves Up on All-Times Win List: After holding Notre Dame's all-time wins record for 17 years, Notre Dame assistant coach Mike Sullivan has now seen his 183-wins mark broken in consecutive weeks. Senior sabre captain Bill Lester (Windsor, Ontario) broke the mark on Feb. 1 at Cleveland State and Siek became the second fencer to break Sullivan's mark on Feb. 7, at Duke. Lester holds a career 208-38 record while Siek is second, ahead of Sullivan, with a 192-21 mark.
