Fencers post strong results in summer competition

AS A SOPHOMORE: Went 23-4 during regular-season competition … began the year with a 12-1 record at the DeCicco Duals … posted an 11-2 mark at the Northwestern Duals … started the year with a 36th-place finish at the Penn State Open.

Logged a 22-2 record in his first season with the Irish ... began the year undefeated at the Ohio State Elite Cup, beating North Carolina's Ezra Baeli-Wang 5-1, Harry Adams 5-3 and Alexander Burte 5-2 ... was next in action at the Northwestern Duals, where he posted 7-1 mark ... beat Stanford's Justin Lee 5-3, before suffering lone loss of the tournament to Alexander Chiang (Air Force), 5-3 ... bested Chaing's teammates 5-1 (Michael Hurst) and 5-3 (David Areneberg) ... out-touched UC San Diego's Eduard Ziinskiy 5-3 and finished the tournament besting Cal Tech foes 5-1 (Mathew Jin), 5-0 (Anup Kishore) and 5-2 (Alex Lew) ... finished the year 12-1 at home in the DeCicco Duals ... blanked Zach Wetzig (Cleveland State) 5-0 ... suffered lone loss of the tournament to Wayne State's Hans Kaiswer, 5-2, but blanked Warrior foe Zachary Shoen 5-0 ... etched a pair of 5-1 victories against Detroit combantants Josef Provido and Mikael Poulik ... beat Indiana's Jake Doan 5-3 and Nick Dyer 5-2 ... bested Wisconsin's Tommy Wiesler 5-0 ... blanked Michigan State foes Alex Ginsberg and Jordan Stark ... finished the tournament with a pair of victories against Michigan entrants Cary Huang (5-1) and Peter Chockley (5-3).

PREP AND PERSONAL: Got his start in the sport after watching the movie "Robin Hood" and asked to take fencing lessons at age five ... fenced with the Los Angeles International Fencing Club Senior and Junior teams ... served as captain both as a junior and senior ... competed in numerous international events throughout prep career ... crowned Youth-14 National Champion in 2010 ... placed third at the Junior Olympics (Cadet level) in 2012 ... came in second at the Junior World Cup in Moedling, Austria same year ... second-place finish stands as favorite athletic achievement to date ... competed as a member of senior men's foil team that won the North American Cup (NAC) in Columbus, Ohio in 2013 ... in junior team foil competition, team won Junior Olympic competition in 2013 ... graduated with honors from Campbell Hall Episcopal in June of 2014 ... participated in the altar guild at St. James Episcopal Church ... growing up, was active in his community as a camp counselor at Easter Seals Camp and as a YMCA Ragger ... hails from Los Angeles, California, same area as current women's foilist Madison Zeiss and former foilist Derek Snyder ... only child of David and Leslie Emge ... full name is Spicer Ellington Emge ... majoring in Architecture.
