    2009 Notre Dame Duals, Day 1

    The Notre Dame fencing team during day one of the Notre Dame Duals on February 7 at the Joyce Center.

    Tough-minded competitor who provides depth in athleticism for the foil squad ... was walk-on defensive back with University of Kansas football team in 2006 before transferring to Notre Dame, where he is reunited with his Kanza Fencing Center club coach, assistant Gia Kvaratskhelia.A very sound technical fencer who rises to the challenge in big matches.

    AS A SOPHOMORE: Ended the season with a final record of 37-10 (.787) competing in the foil after sitting out due to transferring the previous year ... helped the men go 4-1 overall at the 2008 NCAA Western Invititational and compiled an individual record of 10-1 at the event ... posted an individual mark of 5-3 in competition at the New York University Duals and helped the team accrue a 5-1 record against the competition ... earned eight match victories (8-2) on day-one of the Northwestern Duals ... moved his individual record to 29-7 at the conclusion of the Northwestern Duals after posting a day-two mark of 6-1 ... continued impressive campaign at the Notre Dame Duals by tallying an 8-3 record and helping the team earn a clean sweep of the competition posting a perfect 10-0 ledger ... earned the #17 seed in the Midwest Fencing Conference (MFC) Championships before dropping a dual in the round of 16 ... helped the Irish finish second in the team standings at the conference championships.

    PREP & PERSONAL: Lettered three years in both football and tennis at Salina Central High School while training under Kvaratskhelia at the Kanza Fencing Center ... began fencing at age 10 ... had a strong showing at 2005 USFA Summer Nationals in Charlotte, N.C., as part of four-fencer team that won the open men's foil (Kvaratskhelia also was on that team) while posting a seventhplace finish in the cadet/U-17 individual event (in a field of 143) and finishing 11th in junior/U-20 bouting (field of 125) ... placed 32nd among huge field of 253 U-20 men's foilists, at 2005 Junior Olympics in Arlington, Texas ... starting safety for SCHS football team that won two state titles ('04, '05) ... earned all-league honors in football as a junior; allcounty and all-metro as a senior ... helped cap his undefeated senior season by making interception in closing minutes of state title game, preserving final 29-21 margin over Blue Valley Stillwell ... helped SCHS tennis team win state titles in his sophomore and junior seasons ... his former teammate Jake Sharp was the starting running back for the 2007 KU football team ... member of student council and president of the National Honor Society at Salina Central ... also was a state finalist in forensics competition ... his grandfather, Merle A.
