NOTRE DAME, Ind. (2/2/01)-- The Notre Dame men's and women's fencing teams went undefeated (6-0) through the first day of competition at the Notre Dame Open, held Saturday at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse. The action resumes Sunday at 8:00 a.m., when the Irish square off against Minnesota (followed by four other bouts).

Sunday should provide some tight competition for Notre Dame, most notably in the men's competition versus Air Force and in the women's bouts with Northwestern (the Irish will face the Falcons and Wildcats at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m., respectively). Sunday's competition is open to the public and free of charge. The seventh-ranked Notre Dame women (now 12-3 overall) scored impressive victories over Michigan State (24-3), Wayne State (18-9) and Cleveland State (21-6) while also dominating Detroit, Chicago, and Purdue (all by 24-3 scores)

The second-ranked Irish men remained unbeaten (15-0) after defeating Detroit, Chicago, Wayne State, and Purdue (all 21-6) plus wins over Michigan State (20-7) and Cleveland State (22-5).

Top individual efforts for the Notre Dame men included sophomore epeeist Jan Viviani, who won all 11 of his bouts to improve to 21-2 for the season and 53-11 in his Irish career, and sophomore foilist Ozren Debic (8-0 on Saturday, 26-1 for the season and 68-4 in his career). Junior sabreman Gabor Szelle continued his torrid career, winning all six of his bouts to improve to 21-1 for the season and 118-7 in his career.

Szelle, the 1999 NCAA runner-up and 2000 champion, beat Wayne State's Jakub Krochmalski (5-2) in a rematch of the 2000 NCAA title bout.

Sophomore epeeist Meagan Call won all 16 of her bouts (improving to 34-7 for the season, 71-17 in her career) while her classmate Anna Carnick enjoyed her most productive day of the season (17-1), yielding a 31-12 season record and 72-22 career record.

Sophomore foilist Liza Boutsikaris (13-1, 34-5, 70-13) turned in another strong effort while four members of the women's sabre squad went undefeated, led by senior Carianne McCullough (10-0, 20-4, 61-16), sophomore Natalia Mazur (9-0, 20-7, 69-11) and freshman Destanie Milo (9-0, 24-4).

The Notre Dame men's sabre squad posted an impressive 44-8 combined record, led by Szelle, senior Andrzej Bednarski (6-0, 15-1, 108-19), junior Andre Crompton (8-1, 24-5, 89-14) and sophomore Matt Fabricant (8-1, 23-1, 46-5).

Other noteworthy won-loss records for the Irish included senior epeeist Scott Gabler (8-1, 26-8, 42-10), junior foilist Steve Mautone (9-0, 17-7, 96-38) and freshman foilist Maggie Jordan (10-2, 28-8).
