Irish Women Go 9-0 At Notre Dame Duals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The top-ranked Fighting Irish women's fencing team posted a perfect 9-0 record at the Notre Dame Duals on Saturday at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse. With the sweep, Notre Dame now boasts a 29-2 record for the 2008 season. In the opening round, Notre Dame defeated in-state foe Indiana 19-8 before taking down Lawrence 23-4. Round No. 3 featured the Fighting Irish post a dominating 26-1 victory over Michigan. The win over the Wolverines preceded a 21-6 triumph of Wayne State. Notre Dame went to 5-0 on the day with a 23-4 win over Wisconsin. The Fighting Irish then took down Michigan State (21-6) and Cleveland State (25-2) in rounds six and seven, respectively. The Irish defeated Detroit, 26-1, in round eight. In the ninth and final round of the event, Notre Dame bested Florida, 16-11. The Fighting Irish foil unit posted a 78-3 record on the day. Leading the charge was junior Adrienne Nott (22-0) and freshman Hayley Reese (21-0), who both recorded perfect records. Nott's 22nd and final victory of the day marked her 170th career win. Junior Emilie Prot went 17-1 and senior Rachel Cota was 18-2 to aid the Notre Dame effort. In the sabre, Notre Dame compiled a 68-13 mark. Junior Ashley Serrette went 23-4 and now has won 184 career bouts in her collegiate career. Freshman Sarah Borrmann continued her solid rookie campaign by going 17-0 on the day. Fellow freshman Eileen Hassett produced a 14-3 record, while junior Christina Zoccoli went 14-6. Notre Dame's epee squad registered a 54-27 record on Saturday. Junior Kimberlee Montoya posted a team-best 27-0 record on the day to now stand with 150 career wins. Senior Nichola Lubold notched a 14-13 mark, while sophomore Vanessa Rosa went 13-14.
The Notre Dame Duals will conclude on Sunday with the men's competition. Fencing begins at 8:00 a.m. (ET) inside the Joyce Center Fieldhouse.
