DETROIT, Mich. -- The Notre Dame men's and women's fencing teams concluded this regular season with 4-0 performances on Sunday against four Midwestern teams at the University of Detroit. The men's team defeated Michigan 22-5, Michigan State 25-2, Detroit 24-3 and Wayne State 24-3 to finish with an 18-2 record. The women won by similar margins of 23-4 over Michigan, 24-3 over Michigan State, 23-4 over Detroit and 21-6 over Wayne State and also ended with an 18-2 record.

Sophomore sabremen Gabor Szelle and Andre Crompton each posted nine wins, while junior Andrzej Bednarski had eight wins. Freshman foilist Ozren Debic went 8-0 on the day, while freshman Forest Walton and Steve Mautone each added seven wins. Sophomore All-American epeeist Brian Casas and freshman Jan Viviani each compiled 7-1 records. Debic finished the regular season with the team's best record at 42-3, while Szelle led the sabre squad with a 41-3 mark. Viviani went 32-7, while Casas was 33-11.

On the women's side, Natalia Mazur compiled an 11-0 record for the women's sabre squad that combined for a 35-1 record on the day. Junior Carianne McCullough was 10-0, while junior Katie Flanagan went 9-0. Senior Aimee Kalogera won 10 foil bouts, and freshman Liza Boutsikaris (8-0) and senior Magda Krol (6-0) finished with perfect records. Freshman Meagan Call led the epee squad with a 10-1 mark, while freshman Anna Carnick chipped in eight wins.

Members of the Irish fencing teams return to action next weekend at the Junior Olympics in Sacramento, Calif. The full team next will be in action at the March 4, at the Midwest Fencing Conference Team Championships at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse.
