    UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Notre Dame fencing team claimed a pair of silver medals this weekend at the 41st annual Garret Open at the White Building on the campus of Penn State University.

    Nicole Ameli took second place behind Penn State’s Marherita Vincenti Guzzi to lead the Fighting Irish in Saturday’s women’s epee event. Ashley Severson earned the bronze medal to give Notre Dame two of the top-three finishers in the weapon. Ewa Nelip picked up a ninth-place finish for the Fighting Irish.

    Madison Zeiss was the top Notre Dame fencer in the women’s foil, bringing home eighth-place honors. Adriana Camacho finished in 16th place, followed by Sarah Followill (17th place).

    Abigail Nichols and Lian Osier turned in strong showings in the women’s sabre competition, claiming fourth and fifth place, respectively. Johanna Thill (10th place) rounded out Notre Dame’s top-10 performers.

    The Fighting Irish also posted a number of solid results in Sunday’s men’s competition. Michael Rossi and James Kaull paced Notre Dame in the men’s epee, claiming seventh and eighth place, respectively. Matthew McGrath chipped in a 12th-place performance.

    Ariel DeSmet was the top men’s fencer in the foil event, earning a sixth-place finish. Nickolas Kubik brought home a 19th-place standing for Notre Dame.

    The Fighting Irish men enjoyed their best outing in the sabre, as Jason Choy placed behind Penn State’s Michael Mills for runner-up honors. Kevin Hassett earned fifth place for Notre Dame.

    Notre Dame wraps up the fall schedule at the NAC Division I Junior Individuals Nov. 9-12.
