Notre Dame Fencers Have Undfeated Day At Home Meet
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Notre Dame men's and women's fencing teams opened their 1997-98 seasons with a sweep of competition in home meet today at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse. The men's squad went 7-0, while the women's team posted a 6-0 record. The men's foil, epee and sabre team won all of their matches as did the women's foil and epee squads.
Leading the men's foil team was the undefeated trio of Stephane Auriol, Charles Hayes and John Tejada. Each finished with a perfect 10-0 record on the day. Senior captain, Brian Stone and sophomore James Gaither led the men's epee team as they registered a combined 17-3 mark. In his first collegiate action freshman sabremen Andrzej Bednarski led his squad with a 13-2 record.
The women's epee team was led by second year captain Anne Hoos and junior Nicole Mustilli. Hoos was a perfect 17-0, while Mustilli finished 17-2. Sophomore Aimee Kalogera contributed 10 victories and no losses for the women's epee squad. The women's foil team won 89 bouts while losing just seven. Junior captain Myriah Brown had 11 wins and no losses. 1997 NCAA women's epeeist champion, Magda Krol, went 9-0 for the foil squad.
Notre Dame's closest match for both the men and the women was against Northwestern. The men defeated the Wildcats 19-8. Auriol, Bednarski, Hayes, Stone and Tejada were unbeaten in the match. The women's team posted a 23-9 victory over Northwestern. Brown and Hoos were both 4-0 againt the Wildcats, while Krol won all three of her bouts without giving up a touch.
