Notre Dame Fencers Open Winter Season with Sweep of Tough Competition at Rutgers
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Notre Dame's men's and women's fencing team swept
the competition at Rutgers on Sunday, winning three matches by a single
bout. The men's team beat both Stanford and St. John's 14-13 and downed
Rutgers 19-8. The women edged Stanford 17-15 and beat Rutgers 20-12 and
St. John's 19-13. With the wins, the men improved to 10-0 while the women
are 9-0.
Junior All-American sabreman Luke LaValle paced the Irish with his perfect
9-0 mark, including a 5-3 win over St. John's Keith Smart, the defending
NCAA sabre champion. LaValle led the Irish sabre squad that went 8-1
against Stanford in the win. Freshman Andrzej Bednarski was 3-0 against
the Cardinal. Epeeists Brian Stone and Carl Jackson each added two wins.
Against St. John's, the men's epee and sabre squads won 5-4 while the foil
squad dropped 4-5 in the 14-13 win.
On the women's side, defending NCAA epee champion Magda Krol and Nicole
Mustilli went 4-0 against Stanford while foilists Amee Appel, Myriah Brown
and Sara Walsh each added two wins. Mustilli and Anne Hoos added three
wins each against both St. John's and Rutgers while Walsh and Brown
combined for 12 wins against the Red Storm and the Scarlet Knights.
"I knew all along we would have a tough fight against Stanford, both the
men and the women," said Irish head coach Yves Auriol. "Any team that has
four world-class fencers like Stanford has will be tough for anyone, but
our team pulled together and didn't stop fighting until the matches were
won."
Notre Dame travels to Boston for meets at Brandeis and Harvard on Jan. 31,
and Feb. 1.
