Notre Dame Fencers Continue Unbeaten Season
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Notre Dame men's and women's fencing team
extended their unbeaten season with victories over Harvard today. The men
defeated Harvard 16-11 while the women posted a 24-8 win.
The men's team was led by junior All-American Luke LaValle. LaValle, the
sabre captain for the Irish, went 3-0 against the Crimson and is now 12-0
on the season. Sophomore foilist Charles Hayes posted two wins against no
losses improving his season mark to 17-3.
An undefeated trio paced the women's victory. The foil team was led two
4-0 performances from All-Americans Myriah Brown and Sara Walsh. Brown is
22-3 on the season while Walsh is 13-3. Senior captain Anne Hoos
registered a 4-0 mark for the women's epee team. Hoos is leading the
women's teams in victoires with her 28-5 record.
"I'm pleased with the results," said Notre Dame head coach Yves Auriol.
"Harvard has several great fencers, and our intensity was very good in all
five weapons."
Tomorrow the Irish fencers will compete at Brandeis facing the host school
along with Boston College, Duke, NYU and North Carolina.
"It will be a very long day tomorrow," said Auriol. "If we fence with this
intensity, we should be alright."
