Irish Fencers on Pace for Seventh Straight Midwest Championship

NOTRE DAME, Ind.-- Notre Dame's number one ranked women's and number two ranked men's fencing teams went undefeated on the first day of competition at the Midwest Team Championships.

The men's epee and sabre teams earned the number-one seeds for Sunday's direct elimination tournament. Both squads posted 4-0 records. Leading a sabre squad that won 20 bouts and lost one was a 4-0 performance from All-American Luke LaValle. The men's foil squad finished the day 4-0 and will be seeded second, behind Lawrence University. The foil team was paced by a 6-1 showing from sophomore foilist Charles Hayes.

The women's epee and foil squads gained the number-one seeds for Sunday's direct elimination tournament. The epee team went 4-0 and was led by a 10-0 mark from All-American Magda Krol. Junior All-American, Sara Walsh paced the foil team's undefeated day with her 9-0 mark.

Sunday at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse the Irish will face competition from Northwestern and Lawrence. Northwestern captured two number-two seeds and a number-three seed, while Lawrence gained two-number two seeds to go along with their number-one seed in men's foil.
