Irish Fencers Edged by Top Ranked Penn State
NOTRE DAME, Ind.-- Notre Dame's third ranked men's and women's fencing team suffered their first loss of the season to top-ranked Penn State. The men's team lost 17-10 and the women's team fell by a narrow 17-15 score. The Irish men's team is 20-1 on the season while the women's team has posted a 19-1 mark.
Penn State edged Notre Dame's men's epee and foil squads 5-4. Sabre captain Luke LaValle went 2-1 against the Nittany Lions while epeeist Carl Jackson won all three of his bouts against the Nittany Lions. Penn State's men's foil squad defeated the Irish foil squad 7-2 as senior foilist John Tejada was 2-1 for the Irish with victories over Penn State All-Americans Gang Lu and David Lidow.
The women's foil squads of Notre Dame and Penn State dueled to and 8-8 tie with the Lady Lions winning on indicators by a five touch margin. Junior All-American foilist Sara Walsh was an undefeated 4-0 against Penn State and 13-0 for the day. In women's epee Penn State defeated the Irish 9-7, sophomore epeeist Magda Krol had four wins against the Lady Lions and was 12-0 for the day.
Notre Dame won the rest of their competition on the day. The men defeated Northwestern 24-3, Detroit 20-7, Cleveland State 22-5 and Lawrence 20-7. The women's squad defeated Northwestern 24-8, Detroit 27-5, Cleveland State 26-6 and Lawrence 28-4.
Day two of the fencing meet continues Sunday, at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
