Irish Fencers Sweep Competition
Second Day of Notre Dame Meet Successful
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame third-ranked men's and women's fencing teams defeated all five of the teams they faced Sunday with the toughest competition against Ohio State's fifth-ranked women's team. Notre Dame's men's team defeated Michigan 18-9, Michigan State 23-4, Air Force 20-7, Wayne State 22-5 and Ohio State 21-6. Notre Dame's women's squad defeated Michigan 29-3, Michigan State 30-2, Air Force 26-6, Wayne State 23-9 and Ohio State 21-11.
Notre Dame women's team defeated the Buckeyes 21-11 as the women's foil squad won 10-6 and the women's epee squad won 11-5. Junior All-American foilist Sara Walsh was 4-0 against the Ohio State and 13-0 on the day. In the match with Ohio State Walsh defeated 1997 NCAA women's foil champion, Yelena Kalkina 5-3 and 1997 midwest foil champion Patricia Szelle 5-4.
Along with Walsh's undefeated day, foil captain Myriah Brown registered a 9-2 mark. The women's epee team was led by a 12-1 performance from Nicole Mustilli. 1997 NCAA women's epee champion, Magda Krol was 13-2 on the day and is now 54-7 on the season.
The men's squads were paced by an 11-0 mark from All-American sabre captain Luke LaValle. Fellow sabremen Andrjez Bednarski was 10-1. The foil squad was led by 9-1 records from captain Stephane Auriol and senior John Tejada. Brian Stone led the epee team with a 7-1 performance.
Sunday's competition closes out the regular season of dual meets for Notre Dame. The teams will compete in the Midwest Team Championships February 28, and March 1, at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse. The men's team finished the season with a 25-1 record while the women were 24-1.
