Notre Dame Leads After First Day At NCAA Fencing Championships
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame's women's fencing team, bolstered by a 7-1
head-to-head record against three-time defending champion Penn State, stands in
first place after the first of four days at the NCAA men's and women's fencing
championships at the Angela Athletic Facility in Notre Dame, Ind. The Irish
lead the field with 44 points while Stanford is second with 42 points and Penn
State third with 34. Yale is fourth with 31 and Columbia-Barnard fifth with 28.
The women fenced five of eight rounds on Thursday with rounds 6-8 and the
championship bouts to conclude on Friday. Men's sabre will fence rounds 1-5 on
Friday and conclude on Saturday. Men's epee and foil will be contested Saturday
and Sunday.
The championship consists of 120 fencers in five weapons with teams receiving
one point for each win in the 24 fencer round-robin competition in each weapon.
The top four fencers in each weapon advance to the championship semifinal and
final where the winner in each weapon will be determined. Wins in this portion
of the competition do not count toward team standings.
Notre Dame's two-time NCAA women's foil runner-up Sara Walsh leads the women's
foil competition with a 13-1 record with her only loss coming to Ohio State's
defending champion Yelena Kalkina in a rematch of the 1997 title bout. Stanford
Felicia Zimmermann and Monique de Bruin and Columbia-Barnard's Erinn Smart all
stand at 12-2.
Penn State's Alexandra Korfanty leads the women's epee competition with a 12-2
record with both of her losses coming to Notre Dame. Penn State's Charlotte
Walker, Stanford's Jessica Lisagor, St. John's 1996 NCAA women's epee champion
Nicole Dygert, Penn's Kari Coley and Notre Dame's Nicole Mustilli have identical
11-3 records.
The Irish lead the competition on the strength of the 7-1 record against Penn
State. Walsh and Brown went 4-0 against the Nittany Lions in women's foil while
Mustilli and Magda Krol were 3-1. Stanford has not yet fenced Notre Dame and
Penn State in either epee or foil.
Penn State is looking for its fourth straight NCAA fencing championship. Notre
Dame, NCAA champions in 1994, is the last team to beat the Nittany Lions at the
NCAA championships.
