NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame fencing team travels to Northwestern University Saturday for day one of the Northwestern Duals inside the Crown Sports Pavilion in Evanston, Ill.
The Irish opened up the 2013 season with a successful swing through New York City last weekend, which included stops at the St. John's Invitational Jan. 26 and the NYU Invitational Jan. 27.
In its first two competitions of the year, the Notre Dame men's team, ranked third in the CollegeFencing360 Coaches Poll, posted a 6-4 dual record, including a 16-11 triumph over No. 1 Ohio State. 2011 NCAA men's foil champion Ariel DeSmet was named a CF360 Primetime Performer of the Week, finishing with a total bout record of 28-2.
The Irish women's team was powered by 2012 Olympic bronze medal epeeist Courtney Hurley, who like DeSmet, competed in her first collegiate fencing events since winning a gold medal at the 2011 NCAA Championship. Hurley posted a 13-1 dual record at the St. John's invitational, then followed up with an 8-1 effort the following day at the NYU Invitational, helping lead No. 2 Notre Dame to a 9-1 team record. Hurley earned CF360 National Fencer of the Week recognition on the strength of her 21-2 bout performance against top 10 competition.
The first round of fencing at the Northwestern Duals is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. (ET) Saturday inside the Crown Sports Pavilion.
