INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - The No. 19 University of Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team had its 200 free relay and 400 medley relay squads each earn All-America honors on the second day of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium. The Fighting Irish are in 22nd place with 12 points.

All-American #IrishRelays

The 200 free relay team of Justin Plaschka, Daniel Speers, Tabahn Afrik and Reed Fujan qualified for the evening finals following a 13th-place finish with a school-record time of 1:17.29. They improved their time in the finals with a swim of 1:16.97 and finished 11th, which earned the quartet honorable mention All-America honors and was the highest placing relay at the NCAA Championships in program history.

The Irish relays weren't finished as the foursome of Justin Plaschka, Daniel Speers, Robby Whitacre and Trent Jackson followed suit. They finished 15th with a time of 3:06.90 in the morning prelims. The time set a program record that was established just a couple weeks ago at the ACC Championships.

The Fifty is His

Junior Justin Plaschka highlighted the first swim of the 200 free relay with a school record in the 50 free (19.35). Fujan broke his own record of 19.38 that he set at the ACC Championships. He improved his official morning prelim time of 19.58 which placed him 33rd.

Top 25
Speers' morning prelim time of 19:38 in the 50 free placed him 22nd and briefly tied him for the school record with Plaschka. They now share the second-fastest time in program history.

Top 20
On the springboard, Joe Coumos dove in the one-meter board preliminary round and finished with a final score of 313.20 -- good enough for 20th. The placement was an improvement when compared to his last time in the NCAA Championships. In 2015, Coumos came in 23rd with a score of 330.0.

COACH LITZINGER'S THOUGHTS
"Great swimming by our guys this morning and tonight. Our 200 free relay was outstanding with a Notre Dame record and another by Justin Plaschka in the lead off leg of the 50 free. That relay was our highest placing relay in school history. We caught a bad break on the 400 medley but need to refocus for our swims tomorrow."
