After working as the Notre Dame interim assistant cross country and track and field coach since November 2011, Sean Carlson had the interim tag removed by veteran head coach Joe Piane July 1, 2012, to become the newest member of the Irish cross country and track & field coaching staff. With Notre Dame, Carlson works as the recruiting coordinator for both sports and with the men's middle distance and steeplechase during the track & field season.
During his first full-time year with the Irish in 2012-13, Carlson helped the women's track & field team to a pair of BIG EAST Championships, the men's squad to a pair of second place finishes and the cross country teams to top-30 finishes (W: 15th, M: 28th) at the NCAA Championships.
Carlson, who graduated from North Central College in June 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in small business management and entrepreneurship, came to Notre Dame in August of 2011 as a volunteer assistant coach, before moving up to interim assistant coach after a position opened up on the staff.
During his first year with the Irish in 2011-12, Carlson played a heavy role in recruiting, operations and practice and also helped the Irish track & field program win a pair of BIG EAST Championships on the men's side, earn a pair of top-four finishes at the BIG EAST Championships on the women's side and qualify 14 student-athletes for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. In March, he was witness to the men's distance medley relay team winning a national championship at the NCAA Indoor Championships. During the year, the women's cross country team took 22nd at the NCAA Championships, the men's cross country program placed 24th and the men's indoor track & field squad finished 12th.
Prior to coming to Notre Dame, Carlson was a cross country coach and head distance coach for track at Saint Charles North High School in Saint Charles, Ill. There he helped with both practice and operations in addition to his coaching responsibilities.
A team captain and All-American at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., from 2006-10, Carlson helped the cross country squad capture a Division III national championship in 2009 after a runner-up finish in 2008. In 2009 he won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin individual championship after placing first at the conference meet. In 2010, the track and field squad claimed both the NCAA indoor and outdoor crowns.
Upon graduation, Carlson worked as a volunteer assistant track coach for seven months at his alma mater before moving on to Saint Charles North and ultimately Notre Dame.
