    Irish In The ACC: Cross Country/Track & Field

    Notre Dame aims to carry over its long tradition of success from the BIG EAST to one of the nation's true power conferences, the ACC.

    WilsonWon a silver medal and three bronze medals over two Olympics competing for his native Canada ... won a bronze medal as part of the 4x400m relay team at the 1928 Amsterdam games ... followed that up with a silver medal in the 800m and bronze medals in the 400m and 4x400m relay at the 1932 Los Angeles games ... entered Notre Dame right after 1928 games and graduated shortly after the 1932 games ... stellar career at Notre Dame included three All-America scrolls after finishing fourth in the 400m at the 1930 NCAA Outdoor Championships, second in the 880 yard run at the 1931 NCAA Outdoor Championships and first in the 400m at the 1932 NCAA Outdoor Championships ... won three Monograms from 1930-32 ... went undefeated in quarter- and half-mile events and set a national indoor record of 49.3 for the 440 yard dash in 1932 ... won the 600 twice at the AAU Championships, and twice won the 600 at the Milrose Games ... won the 440 yard title, finished second in the 4x440 yard relay and third in the 880 yard run at the 1930 British Empire Games ... began coaching after college, spending 13 years at Loyola (Chicago) coaching swimming, basketball, cross country and track and field, before being promoted to athletics director in 1945 ... coached track and field and cross country at Notre Dame from 1950-72 ... during 23 years, Irish won a cross country national championship in 1957 and appeared in the national meet 18 times ... also guided the track and field squad to 11 top-10 finishes at the national outdoor meet ... coached three track and field national champions and had 28 track and field and eight cross country runners earn All-America honors under his watch ... voted into the Canadian Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1954 ... elected to the Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame in 1967 ... named national coach of the year by the NCAA Cross Country Coaches Association in 1972 ... inducted into U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2008 ... indoor meet - the Alex Wilson Invitational - is run every year in his honor at Notre Dame.
