Track & Field Comes Through With Solid Performances At Outdoor Opener

TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Notre Dame track & field team sent several athletes out West to the Arizona State Invitational to kick off its 2008 outdoor season, and came home with a bundle of personal-best marks and NCAA regional qualifying standards. The event was held on Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium from March 28-29. Next on the schedule for the Irish is an April 3-4 showing at Arizona's Multi Event meet held in Tucson. 100m Hurdles (W): Alyissa Hasan turned in a qualifying time of 13.91, which was also the 10th fastest time recorded in school history. 400m Dash (W): A personal-best time of 54.14 was recorded by Joanna Schultz, who finished second in the race with the NCAA regional qualifying standard. 400m Dash (M): Freshman Miklos Szebeny was seventh with a time of 49.22 in his outdoor debut. 100m Dash (W): Senior Brienne Davis topped the field by stopping the clock in 11.90 ... the next closest finisher was Cal State Fullerton's Kristyne Hanberg (12.20). 100m Dash (M): First-year sprinter Tyrell Atkins was Notre Dame's highest finisher ... he was 12th with a time of 11.14. 800m Run (W): It was neck-and-neck between freshman Kelly Langhans (2:10.65) and Natalie Johnson (2:10.66) all the way to the finish ... Langhans, who broke the tape first, secured the win with the program's 10th-fastest time ever in the event. 400m Hurdles (M): Senior Austin Wechter was ninth in 53.72. 200m Dash (W): Davis cashed in with a career-best time of 24.46 and a third-place finish.
4x400m Relay (W): Gold honors went to the tandem of Cora Dayon, Johnson, Schultz, and Crysta Swayzer ... their time of 3:41.55 was an NCAA qualifying mark. 4x400m Relay (M): Szebeny teamed with Wechter, Billy Buzaid, and Balazs Molnar to place fourth in 3:13.57. Hammer Throw (W): Anna Weber qualified for the NCAA regional meet with a toss of 55.98m. Hammer Throw (M): With a long toss of 54.70m, Greg Davis earned a 13th-place finish. Discus (W): The school's fifth-best throw ever came from sophomore Jaclyn Espinoza ... she hurled the discus 49.37m for fourth-place honors. Discus (M): Brandon Drenon was 11th with a throw of 50.74. Javelin (W): Sophomore Elise Knutzen was Notre Dame's highest placer (10th) with a throw of 39.72m ... Hasan tossed in a career-best 35.12m performance. Long Jump (M): Sophomore Eric Quick was second with a career-best 7.26m that qualified him for the NCAA regional meet. Pole Vault (M): A career-best 5.05m by Matt Schipper tied him for the 10th spot on the program's all-time list. Shot Put (W): Weber was fourth (14.14m) and Jacklyn Espinoza (13.71m) was one spot behind her in the final standings. Shot Put (M): Mike Schubert was sixth with a long toss of 16.63m. High Jump (M): Blair Jajcina placed fourth by getting off the ground with a high of 2.05m. Triple Jump (M): Quick took second by covering 14.76m worth of ground.
