Richartz, Irish close out Sun Angel Track Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Notre Dame track and field team competed on the final day of the 39th annual Sun Angel Track Classic Saturday afternoon. Graduate Student Nathan Richartz highlighted the final day of the meet when he placed first in the pole vault premiere.

Richartz claimed his third win of the season when he cleared 5.55m (18-02.50) on his first attempt. He has won the event in every meet he has competed in this season and he owns the top two vaults in the ACC.

Sophomore Shae Watkins led a trio of Irish in the men's open discus throw. Watkins finished runner-up after his personal-record throw traveled 52.20m (171-03). His personal record currently ranks 10th all-time in school history. Daniel Hardiman also set a PR in the discus with a 48.01m (157-06) and he finished ninth.

Senior Jordan Shead had a strong day and she started it off in the 200m dash. Shead set a personal record with a 24.35 and finished third overall. Later on, she ran in the 400m dash premiere and finished eighth with a 54.33. In the 4x400m relay premiere, the team of Shead, Summer Thorpe, Allison Bartoszewicz, and Grace Cronin finished seventh overall (3:42.83).

Rachel Tanczos tallied a top-three finish in the open shot put. She set a personal record with her best throw of 14.79m (48-06.25) and finished third overall. Matthew Birzer claimed another top-five finish in the infield for the Irish. He finished fourth in the high jump after clearing 2.10m (6-10.75).

Up Next

Notre Dame will take part in the Louisville Invitational next weekend at Cardinal Park. The meet will kick off with field events Friday afternoon and conclude on Saturday.


Matt Paras, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since January 2018. In his role, he coordinates all media efforts for the Notre Dame women's lacrosse and cross country/track & field programs. A native of Warwick, Rhode Island, Paras is a graduate of the University of Louisville where he completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in Sport Administration. Prior to arriving at Notre Dame, he worked at Vanderbilt University as the sports information contact for the women's soccer and lacrosse programs.
