PISCATAWAY, NJ – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams opened up the first day (May 3) of the 2013 BIG EAST Championship at Rutgers University with 19 top-eight finishes through 11 events, which included the decathlon, heptathlon and the men’s and women’s hammer. The three-day conference meet runs from May 3-5 at the Bauer Track & Field Complex.

The women’s team got on the board tallying up seven points in the hammer, the only finals event offered on the first day. Vivien Devaney placed fifth (55.43m) and Madeline Casanova finished sixth (53.72m). Anthony Thomas placed eighth with a hurl of 55.75m in the event on the men's side, earning one point for the Irish.

Midway through the decathlon and the heptathlon, Ted Glasnow (long jump - 6.78m) and Carly Loeffel (high jump - 1.69m) each achieved a victory in the array of events the pair faced today.

“I thought we did well today in the multi events,” said assistant coach Jim Garnham (field events). “Tomorrow is a new day and we have to focus on the events that are in front of us. The biggest thing is staying consistent and executing in the things we covered in practice - if we do this we should be fine.”

The Irish return to action tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. with the decathlon’s 110mH. The multi-events will crown a winner concluding the heptathlon’s javelin contest at 10:10 a.m. and the decathlon’s 1,500m run at 3:10 p.m. The men’s shot put will begin the field events on the second day at 11 a.m. while the women’s 1,500m run will kickoff the events on the track at 1:30 p.m.
