NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Sophomore Carly Loeffel (Cary, Ill.) wrapped up her 2013 outdoor season with a 15th-place finish in the heptathlon during the third day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Loeffel compiled a total of 5,470 points. The point total is the best she has achieved in her career, overtaking her previous best of 5,411 points set at this year's BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Loeffel closed in on the school record, held by Alyissa Hasan (5,509 points-2008).
Loeffel overtook BIG EAST foe Elizabeth Kline (Pittsburgh) on the final day after finishing runner-up and just 49 points behind her at the conference meet. Loeffel was 51 points better than Kline (20th) and opened up the gap the most during the long jump, pulling away by a 123-point margin in the event.
All-American honorees will be officially announced by The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) at a later date. First-team USTFCCCA All-America honors are awarded to those who earn any portion of a team point at the national championships, or reach an eight-entrant final. Second-team All-America honors are handed out to those whose final placing in the national meet range from ninth to 16th place.
Three Notre Dame student-athletes are set to compete tomorrow in their respected finals events. Junior Alexa Aragon is scheduled to compete in the 3,000m steeplechase at 2:57 p.m. (PST). Senior Rebecca Tracy will compete in the 1,500m at 2:19 p.m. (PST). Jeremy Rae will follow in his 1,500m finals race at 2:31 p.m. (PST).
