Irish Track and Field Sends 22 Student-Athletes to NCAA Regional

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Irish track and field teams are set to compete this weekend at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships at the Cardinal Park Track Complex on the campus of the University of Louisville. Notre Dame will send 22 student-athletes to the regional contest with hopes of qualifying for the national meet. Competition begins Friday with the men's javelin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the track events at 1:30 p.m. The women's javelin gets underway Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay beginning the track events at 4:00 p.m. Several Irish student-athletes currently hold some of the top marks in the nation. Patrick Smyth's 10,000-meter time of 28:25.85 ranks fifth, while Mary Saxer is sixth with a pole vault mark of 4.30m (14-1 1/4). Matt Schipper is 12th in the pole vault with a height of 5.30m (17-4 1/2), Joanna Schultz carded a 400-meter time of 53.12 to rank 16th and Jaclyn Espinoza is 19th with a discus throw of 52.10m (170-11).
