AS A SOPHOMORE: In his first year with the Irish track team, earned All-BIG EAST and All-America honors ... made his track debut at the Notre Dame Invitational, finishing third in the 800 meters behind two teammates in 1:51.02 ... had a breakthrough race at the Meyo Invitational, taking sixth overall (1:49.69) in a strong field to nearly attain a provisional NCAA mark and match 10th-fastest time in school history ... had an outstanding performance in the 800 meters at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship, finishing second in 1:50.45 behind teammate Thomas Chamney ... earned more all-BIG EAST honors in the 4x800-meter relay, running the sixth-fastest time in school history with Chamney, Adam Currie, and Brett Adams (7:28.84) ... earned All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships as part of sixth-place distance medley relay unit (9:40.61) with Currie, Ryan Postel, and Kurt Benninger ... kept his focus on the 800 meters throughout the outdoor campaign ... ran among the top section at the Stanford Invitational, finishing 14th with a time of 1:50.72 ... won the 800-meter competition at the Indy Relays, qualifying for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the process (1:50.34) ... joined Currie, Adams, and Chamney on the 4x800-meter relay team that attained the fifth-best time in school history and ninth place overall at the Drake Relays, running 7:31.96 ... just missed more individual all-BIG EAST honors at the outdoor league meet, finishing fourth in the 800-meter final (1:51.42) after running 1:50.46 in the preliminaries ... helped the 4x800-meter relay team finish second in the BIG EAST with the third-fastest mark in school history (7:26.04); also helped Irish earn valuable points towards eventual BIG EAST outdoor title ... closed out his season by finishing 11th at the NCAA Mideast Regional 800-meter preliminaries, running 1:50.61 to miss qualifying for the final by just three spots. AS A FRESHMAN: Did not see action as a member of the Notre Dame men's soccer team. HIGH SCHOOL AND PERSONAL: Three-sport letterwinner (track and field, soccer, basketball) at South Bend St. Joseph's High School ... holds St. Joseph's track and field school records in the 400 meters, 800 meters, 4x400 relay and 4x800 relay ... also holds the sectional and conference record in the 800 meters ... his 4x800 relay team holds the sectional, conference and regional record ... placed second at the '04 state finals in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.87 ... originally came to Notre Dame on soccer scholarship ... concluded prep soccer career by leading St. Joseph's to a 24-0 and a state championship as a senior, while anchoring a defense that set a school record by allowing only eight goals on the year ... named 2003 Indiana Player of the Year, in addition to receiving the Northern Indiana Player of the Year award the same year ... earned all-state, all-city, all-conference and team MVP honors as both a junior and a senior ... selected to play in the '04 South Bend Tribune SportsFest All-Star Game, as well as Indiana all-district games in '03 and '04 ... participated in National Honor Society, Latin Club and Rotary Club in high school ... three family members graduated from Notre Dame -- father John (1977), uncle William (1984) and sister Lindsey (2006) ... born Dec. 26, 1985 ... son of John and Cynthia Cavanaugh ... enrolled in the College of Arts and Letters as a pre-professional/anthropology major.
