NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Notre Dame men's cross country team finished in a tie for sixth place, while the women's squad finished 11th at the 53rd running of the Notre Dame Invitational Friday at the Notre Dame nine-hole golf course.
Senior Patrick Smyth paced the men's team, finishing fifth with a time of 23:36. Sophomore Dan Jackson was 34th in 24:26 and sophomore Paul Springer finished 43rd in 24:32. Freshman Joe Miller covered the five-mile course in 24:32, as well, to finish 44th, while sophomore Ryan Gamboa was 91st with a time of 25:02. Sophomore Ryan Jacobs was 101st in 25:10 and sophomore Spencer Carter finished 125th with a time of 25:23.
Notre Dame finished with 217 points, tying Florida for sixth place. Florida State took the men's title with 81 points, followed by Tulsa and Texas A&M. Providence and Butler rounded out the top five. Lamar's Samuel Kosgei won the men's Blue Division race in 23:32.
Junior Lindsey Ferguson led the Irish women, finished 17th in 17:04. Sophomore Marissa Treece was 38th with a time of 17:19, while freshman Rachel Velarde finished 54th in 17:34. Sophomore Abby Higgins covered the 5K in 17:48 to finish 81st and junior Beth Tacl was 82nd in 17:49. Senior Emily Wauford finished 97th in 18:06 and senior Becca Bauman finished 103rd with a time of 18:10.
Florida State swept the team titles, finishing first in the women's race with 88 points, followed by Princeton and Michigan. Stony Brook and Florida rounded out the top five. Notre Dame finished 11th with 272 points. North Carolina's Brie Felnagle won the women's Blue Division race in a course-record time of 16:21.
Both Irish teams will compete in the Pre-NCAA meet Oct. 18 in Terre Haute, Ind.
