Oct. 11, 1997 Men Place Fourth, Women Finish Fourteenth at Furman InvitationalNOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Notre Dame men's and women's cross country teams finished fourth and fourteenth respectively at the prestigious Furman Invitational on Saturday, October 11. Running against some of the premier teams in the nation, the men finished fourth with 185 points, in front of four other ranked teams and behind only powerhouses Stanford, Colorado, and Wisconsin. The women found the going tougher as they finished 14th out of 23 teams. On the men's side, junior Antonio Arce again paced the Irish as he finished 19th with a time of 25:06. Freshman Ryan Shay was the second Irish finisher as he ran to 28th place with a time of 25:21. Senior All-American Jason Rexing came in third for the Irish as he finished in 37th place with a time of 25:32. With junior Ryan Maxwell finishing 42nd with a time 25:34, the Irish placed four runners in the top 50. On the women's side, sophomore Alison Klemmer led Notre Dame as she finished 42nd with a time of 18:08. Sophomore All-American JoAnna Deeter was close on her heels as she finished in 48th place with a time of 18:12.
