NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Notre Dame freshman Meg Ryan (Fairfield, Conn., Fairfield Warde HS) on Wednesday was selected as the female BIG EAST Conference runner of the week. Ryan placed first at last week's National Catholic Invitational, which was her collegiate debut.

Ryan claimed the crown by defeating 280 athletes at Notre Dame's Nine-Hole Golf Course. She finished the five-kilometer race in 17:37. The Irish scored 41 points to finish on top of the 25-team field.

The rookie entered Notre Dame after being selected as the 2009 Connecticut Gatorade Track & Field Player of the Year. She finished fourth at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in the mile and holds six school records in addition to the mile record for the state of Connecticut.

The Irish will play host to the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, Oct. 2 at Notre Dame's Nine-Hole Golf Course.
