Wagner, Amrhein Lead 8-Home-Run Day as Irish Sweep Providence

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Sophomore designated hitter Jeff Wagner and senior catcher Mike Amrhein continued their offensive onslaught--combining for five of eight Notre Dame home runs--as the Irish powered their way to a crucial doubleheader sweep of visiting Providence College, 10-5 and 14-10, in BIG EAST Conference cross-divisional action Saturday at Eck Stadium.

Saturday's action, originally scheduled to begin at noon, did not start until 2:15 due to a heavy downpour that began on Friday night. Additionally, the Irish have announced that Sunday's doubleheader vs. Boston College will be moved up an hour to an 11:00 a.m. start.

Notre Dame (17-12, 3-3 BIG EAST)--which has won eight of its last nine games but had three conference games rained out last week at UConn and St. John's---moved ahead of Villanova (2-4) in the National Division (the Wildcats split at home vs. UConn, 20-11 and 10-11) while remaining tied with Georgetown (4-4) for third place in the division (the Hoyas pulled off a sweep at St. John's 2-1 and 15-6). The Irish also picked up a game on second-place Rutgers (6-3), which split its home doubleheader with West Virginia on Saturday (8-0, 6-8), while Seton Hall (7-2) remained in first with a sweep of Pittsburgh (11-0, 2-1).

Providence (14-12, 1-8 BIG EAST) was done in by a five-run Irish third inning in the opener before surging to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap. But the Irish scored twice in the fourth and three times in the sixth before exploding for nine runs in the seventh to surge to a commanding 14-4 lead.

Senior righthander Darin Schmalz (4-2) picked up the win in the opening seven-inning game, going the distance while allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits and two walks, with one strikeout. The win marked Schmalz' fourth complete game in seven starts this season and is his 25th career victory, tying him with Pat Leahy (1990-92) for sixth place on the Irish career wins list.

Senior righthander Brad Lidge (4-2)--making his first appearance since being invited to this summer's USA Baseball national team camp--again had to overcome a choppy start, in the nine-inning nightcap. Lidge allowed four runs (all earned) on eighth hits and four walks over seven full innings. After allowing three runs in the fourth, Lidge shut out PC from the fifth through seventh innings, when he picked up five of his nine strikeouts.

The Irish punded out 17 hits in the nightcap, with every starter coming through with at least one hit, one RBI and one run scored.

Wagner homered once in the first game and twice in the nightcap, giving him six home runs in five career games vs. PC (he also has six home runs in Notre Dame's last nine games this season). Amrhein added a home run in each game as well, with senior third baseman J.J. Brock providing the clinching two-run shot in the opener. A pair of freshmen--first baseman Jeff Felker and second baseman Brant Ust--rounded out Notre Dame's five-home-run effort in the second game. Amrhein and Wagner now share the team lead, with seven home runs each.

After opening the day with a run in the bottom of the first, the Irish put five runs on the board in the third inning of PC's ace, junior lefthander Todd Incantalupo (3-3), who ultimately allowed nine runs (all earned) on 12 hits and two walks over five innings (with just one K).

Senior rightfielder Pat O'Keefe broke out of his recent slump with a leadoff single in the third before senior centerfielder Randall Brooks legged out a bunt single. The Irish then completed the double steal before O'Keefe scored and Brooks went to second on a throwing error by catcher Scott Friedholm. Amrhein then launched a shot over the leftfield fence and righthanders Wagner and Ust both sent singles to the opposite field. Sophomore leftfielder Allen Greene then grounded out, advancing the runners, and Felker struck out before a bloop single into shallow left field from junior shortstop Todd Frye plated both runners.

The Irish stretched to a 7-0 bulge with a run in the fourth before PC made a move in the fifth. Lidge worked himself into trouble, walking leadoff man Rudy Mauritz and hitting Mike Pandolfo wit h a pitch, before a bunt single, a bad-hop infield single and a base-hit to center by Angelo Ciminiello cut the lead to 7-3. But Lidge forced Mike Harrington to pop up to Frye, ending the rally. Notre Dame retook control in the bottom of the fifth, with Felker smacking a leadoff single before Brock sent a one-out shot over the fence in left-center.

In the nightcap, PC senior righthander Andy Byron (3-2) throttled the Irish with his breaking ball over the first three innings, allowing only a triple by Brock and a walk by Amrhein. Meanwhile, the Friars opened to a 4-0 lead, highlighted by an RBI double from Bryan Tamul and a run-scoring single from Ciminiello.

The Irish struck for two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth--on consecutive shots over the leftfield fence from Wagner and Ust-- before surging ahead with three runs in the sixth. Ust walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth and Greene followed with an RBI double to the gap in left-center. The runners moved up on a wild pitch before the lefthanded-hitting Felker unloaded his first career collegiate home run over the rightfield fence.

Notre Dame erupted for nine runs in the seventh--several of which proved valuable after the Friars scored three times in both the eighth and ninth off senior righthander Mike Balicki. The Irish sent 13 batters to the plate in the seventh, with Wagner blasting a two-run shot to near-dead centerfield and Amrhein capping the flurry with an impressive three-run linedrive homer over the leftfield fence.

Amrhein's two home runs pushed him past Eric Danapilis (1990-93) into fourth place on the Irish career home runs list, with 30. His five-RBI day also vaulted Amrhein past four former Irish greats--including current assistant coach Cory Mee--into fourth on the Irish career RBI list (168). Amrhein's four hits Saturday moved him past Joe Binkiewicz (1989-92) into seventh on the Irish career hits list (226).
