Irish Sweep Georgetown, Clinch Big East National Division Title

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Darin Schmalz and Alex Shilliday continued to sparkle on the mound while the Notre Dame offense pounded out 28 hits--including 13 for extra bases--as the Irish clinched the National Division title of the BIG EAST Conference with a convincing 14-0, 11-1 doubleheader sweep of visiting Georgetown at Eck Stadium.

Notre Dame (35-17, 14-6 BIG EAST)--which is 22-2 at home this season--technically had clinched the division title before securing Saturday's second win, by virtue of Villanova's 8-5 home win over second-place Rutgers (13-9). The Irish are scheduled to conclude regular season conference play on Sunday vs. the Hoyas while Rutgers and Villanova are slated for a doubleheader.

The Irish will open play at the BIG EAST Tournament (at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Conn.) on May 13 vs. a yet-to-be-determined "wild card" team from either the American or National Division.

A selection committee will determine the final wild card team during a conference call on Tuesday morning and Notre Dame's potential opponents include: 9-12 Connecticut (which was rained out Saturday at Boston College and will play a doubleheader vs. the Eagles on Saturday and a third game Monday afternoon); 9-15 Providence (which split at home with Pitt, 2-3 and 11-2); 10-12 Villanova (which is vying to join Seton Hall as a second wild card team from the National Division); and 7-15 Boston College.

In other BIG EAST action Saturday, West Virginia (16-6) moved back atop the American Division with a 4-3 home win over St. John's (15-6). The Mountaineers need only to split tomorrow's doubleheader vs. the Red Storm to claim the American Division title. The winner of the American will face Seton Hall on the first day of the BIG EAST Tournament while the runner-up will be paired with Rutgers.

Since opening conference play with an 0-3 weekend at Seton Hall, Notre Dame is 14-3 in its last 17 conference games and 27-6 overall since dropping the series with the Pirates.

The Irish--who made just one error all day--bunched 15 of their 21 runs during the doubleheader over two innings. In the opener, Notre Dame sent 14 batters to the plate in the second inning while scoring nine runs, highlighted by sophomore leftfielder Allen Greene's leadoff home run and his two-run blast later in the inning. A six-run sixth inning broke open a 4-1 game in the nightcap, with sophomore DH Jeff Wagner smacking a three-run shot for his team-leading 15th home run of the season.

Nine different Notre Dame players scored in the opener while every Irish starter collected a hit in the nightcap. Hot-hitting freshman right fielder Jeff Perconte--who is batting 16-for-32 since being inserted into the starting lineup on April 26--also homered in the opener as the Irish pushed their season home run total to 61, third-best in team history and just three shy of equaling the record (64) set by the 1993 Irish squad.

Notre Dame's 28-for-69 day extended the team batting average to .337, well ahead of the Irish record set in '89 and '93. The Irish also boosted their team slugging percentage to .540 (well above the record .519, set in '93), including 112 doubles and 33 triples (which are threatening the respective records of 125, set in '93, and 41, set in '94).

Schmalz--making his 51st career start for the Irish--faced just 25 batters, four above the seven-inning minimum. The senior righthander allowed five hits and a walk while striking out seven en route to his second solo shutout of the season and the fifth of his career.

Schmalz (8-2) faced three batters in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings, four in the fifth and sixth and a game-high five in the second. Sean Mignona reached base with two outs in the first, after an error by third baseman J.J. Brock, but Schmalz nailed Mignona with a crisp pickoff move to Jeff Felker. Tom Farley then led off the second with an infield single but Schmalz induced Andy Volpp into a 1-6-3 double play. Schmalz erased yet another runner in the seventh, when pinch-hitter Andy Volpp hit a leadoff single to left, Andrew Mariniello struck out and pinch-hitter Tom Moran grounded into a game-ending, 5-4-3 double play.

The victory improved Schmalz' career record to 29-12 while he also notched his seventh complete game of the season and 17th of his career.

Shilliday, a sophomore righthander, went eight strong innings in the nightcap, facing just four batters over the minimum before freshman righthander Tom O'Hagan closed out the day in the ninth. Shilliday (6-3) struck out six Hoyas batters, pushing his team-leading total to 61, while allowing just four hits and two walks. He faced the minimum number of batters in five innings, including the sixth when Volpp lined into a 5-3 double play after Matt O'Brien had hit a leadoff single.

The Hoyas scored their lone run of the day in the second, when Farley drew a leadoff walk, moved up on a groundout and scored on Kevin DeSanto's single. But Irish catcher Mike Amrhein nailed DeSanto trying to steal second, with the Hoyas going on to leave just three runners on base during the nightcap.

Shilliday has won six of his last seven decisions, with five of those wins coming against BIG EAST opponents Boston College, Rutgers (away), Villanova, West Virginia (away) and Georgetown.

Wagner went 5-for-8 in the doubleheader, with seven RBI and three runs scored. He collected Notre Dame's third triple of the day in the second inning of the nightcap, sending a leadoff blast into the wind, with the ball blowing from left to right and over the head of rightfielder Tim Mooney. It was Wagner's first triple of the season (and just the second of his Irish career), giving Notre Dame 10 different players who have tripled this season.

Brock, hitting in the #9 spot, went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored in the opener before adding a hit, RBI and run in three at-bats during the nightcap.

Notre Dame Baseball Notes (May 3, 1997)

    Team Notes

    • With the addition of Perconte, seven Irish starters are now hitting .439 or higher (four are .375-plus): Amrhein (.411), Wagner (.387), Ust (.376), Perconte (.375), Brooks (.361), Brock (.354) and Greene (.349) ... freshman first baseman Jeff Felker checks in at .329 while junior second baseman Todd Frye is at .311.
    • The Irish are on pace to set records for, among others, home runs per game (1.15) and at-bats per home run (29.2) ... Notre Dame's team batting average (.337) has not been higher since March 7 (.339) ... the near-record-setting home run totals include 15 from Wagner, 13 from Amrhein, 10 from Ust, six from Greene (including four in the last six games), four from Felker, three each from Perconte, Brooks and Brock, two from injured senior Justin Scholl and one each from senior Pat O'Keefe and junior Dan Leatherman.
    • Notre Dame's pitching staff has amassed 345 strikeouts, already fifth-best in team history and just 47 behind the team record of 392 (set in '93).
    • The Irish offense has continued its record-setting march despite starting three freshmen (Ust, Felker and Perconte), two sophomores (Wagner and Greene) and Frye, who had just 16 at-bats during his first two seasons.
    • On the defensive side of things, Notre Dame has shown noticeable improvement since the squad switched Ust and Frye between second base and shortstop. In those nine games, Frye has yet to make an error while at second base (in 25 chances). Ust has just three errors at the challenging shortstop position (43 chances) while making several tough plays. The team fielding percentage over the past nine games with Ust at shortstop and Frye at second is .957 (compared to .941 overall), with six of the 14 errors during that span coming in the opening game at Pitt on the league's worst-kept infield. In the other six games since the defensive switch, the Irish have gone without an error three times while making just one error in the remaining three games.
    • Schmalz and Shilliday came up big for an Irish pitching staff best by injuries. Seven of the team's pitchers remain hampered by injuries, with Scott Cavey and Steve Szczepanski out for the remainder of the season due to an elbow problem and hand surgery, respectively. Another freshman righthander, John Corbin, has missed the last 36 games due to an elbow injury (the above threesome alone has missed a combined 93 games due to injury). Yet another freshman, lefthander Mark Lapinskas, also was not available Saturday due to injury.
    • The most noticeable void in the Irish pitching staff has been the absence of three of the squad's top-four preseason starters. Junior righthander Dan Stavisky, who went 12-2 over his first two seasons, lost his only start (on Feb. 23 vs. Mississippi) and owns a 10.29 ERA in seven total innings of work. Stavisky has struggled to find his old form while returning from a shoulder injury that held him out of the fall season. Junior lefthander Gregg Henebry 3-2, 5.84) has missed six straight weekend starts due to a shoulder injury of his own while sophomore righthander Brad Lidge (4-3, 40 K's in 38 innings) has missed three straight starts with an elbow injury.

    Player Notes

    • Brooks and Brock both hit their 13th career triples in the doubleheader, moving into a tie for fourth in Irish history (just one shy of earning a share of second) ... Brock has eight triples this season, fifth in Irish history (one back of third).
    • Perconte now officially has enough at-bats to be ranked among the team leaders (minimum of one AB per team game) and checks in at fourth on the team with a .375 avg. (21-for-56) ... in his eight games as a starter, the switch-hitting Perconte has scored a team-leading 13 runs, with eight RBI, three home runs and two doubles.
    • Amrhein had two of Notre Dame six doubles on Saturday, giving him 47 in his career (one behind Joe Binkiewicz for fourth on the Irish career doubles chart) ... Amrhein's three runs scored in Saturday's action give him 187 in his career, tying him with former teammate Scott Sollmann for fifth in Irish history.
    • Wagner's 15 home runs are easily the most ever by an Irish sophomore (Ryan Topham had 10 in 1994) ... his 15 home runs are tied for fourth in Irish history, five behind Frank Jacob's record 20 (in 1991) and three behind Topham and Tim Hutson (who hit 18 in 1995 and '88, respectively) ... Wagner also hit his 20th double of the season in the opener (tied for sixth on the Irish single season charts), pushing his season slugging pct. to .732 (just behind Topham's .733, which ranks third all-time at Notre Dame).
    • Frye executed a sacrifice bunt in each game, bringing his season total to 11 (tied for 7th in Irish history, three off the record shared by three players).
    • Sophomore catcher Mike Knecht registered his first career hit in the opener, a 5th-inning, two-out single through the left side of the infield (he went on to score on a single to center by Wagner).
