A Look Back At The 2002 Super Regionals At No. 1 Florida State

The Irish defeated the Seminoles in three games to advance to the program's second College World Series.

    Veteran of BIG EAST Conference who joined Notre Dame program in fall of 1999, after playing at Georgetown as a freshman ... signed free-agent contract with Los Angeles Dodgers organization, after 2002 season ? switch-hitter who earned third team all-BIG EAST honors in 2001 and ?02 (as a DH) ? also played at catcher and outfield ? delivered many clutch hits in historic 2002 season... his four-year college stats included a .290 batting average, 85 RBI, six home runs, eight triples and 32 doubles in 180 games (132 starts), including similar numbers with the Irish (.292, 63 RBI, 4 HR, 6 3B, 24 2B in 142 GP/108 GS) ? played summer ball with Newark (N.Y.) Raptors of the Northeastern League (2000) and the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League (2001).

    AS A SENIOR: Third team all-BIG EAST performer and clutch hitter who emerged as starting DH, batting .311 with 36 RBI, three home runs and 14 doubles (third on team), plus team-high 13 times hit-by-pitch ? appeared in 62 games (35 of 53 starts at DH) ? his versatility played key role due to injuries that scrambled lineup (10 outfield starts, seven at catcher, one at second base) ? hit mostly No. 6 in the lineup (19 games), also starting 19 in 2-hole due to Steve Sollmann?s early injury ? second on team in leadoff on-base pct. (.548, fifth with .404 overall OB) and runners advanced (30) ? hit 8-for-14 at Homestead (Fla.) Challenge (2 RBI, 3 R, 2 2B) ? his 7th-inning single broke 2-2 tie in 5-2 win over St. John?s ? poked single into left field, plating Javi Sanchez with game-ending run vs. Western Michigan (5-4) ? delivered dramatic hit in 7-inning opener vs. Virginia Tech, driving pinch-hit triple off rightfield wall and scoring on Joe Thaman single for 11th-inning win (2-1) ? sent two-out, two-run single to right field for 6-4 lead in 9-4 win over Arizona State ? hit go-ahead single (4-3) in 7-4 win over Michigan ? placed two-run double down leftfield line in 8th inning of BIG EAST Tournament game vs. Virginia Tech, for 5-4 lead in 8-4 win ? his 6th-inning double forged 2-2 tie in BIG EAST title game vs. Rutgers (3-2) ? hit solo home runs in both games of NCAA Regional vs. Ohio State (8-6, 9-6), the first coming as a pinch-hitter ? doubled and scored in College World Series opener vs. Stanford (4-3 loss) ? reached base twice (1B, HBP) in 5-3 CWS win over Rice ? hit-by-pitch in second game vs. Stanford, later singling and scoring for 3-2 deficit (the Cardinal won 5-3).

    AS A JUNIOR: Third team all-BIG EAST at DH, appearing in 43 games (21 of 30 starts at DH) ... hit .286 with 17 RBI ... homered in 14-9 win over Texas Pan-American ? ranked second among all BIG EAST players with four triples, plus six doubles ... owned team?s second-best batting (.385) with runners on ... hit .333 in BIG EAST games ? his RBI single helped claim 5-0 lead vs. Rutgers (8-2) ... hit 3-for-5 in sweep of West Virginia (2 RBI, 2B, 3B) ... had two-run single and scored in 12-4 NCAA Tournament win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

    AS A SOPHOMORE: Appeared in 40 games, with 25 starts (19 at DH) ... hit .259 with 14 RBI (4 2B, 12 BB) ... stroked RBI double and scored vs. Wake Forest (8-5), adding RBI single and run scored vs. Georgia (6-4) ... had two RBI and scored vs. Illinois (12-3) ... sparked wild 10-6 comeback vs. Tulane at NCAA Starkville Regional, with RBI hits from both sides of the plate ... stroked pinch-hit, lefthanded double over centerfielder?s head to ignite four-run 7th-inning rally in that game before game-tying single in four-run 8th (righthanded) ... plated consecutive runs in regional title game vs. Mississippi State (10-9 loss).

    AT GEORGETOWN (1999): Led Hoyas in batting for most of season, finishing .283 (2 HR, 18 RBI) ? set team record for at-bats in a game (4-for-8, 2 2B, 4 RBI in 32-16 win over Delaware State).

    PREP & PERSONAL: Team MVP and all-state catcher at Walsh Jesuit High School, leading team with .494 batting (6 HR, 35 RBI) ? two-year team captain ... set school career records for hits, RBI and home runs (tying season hits record) ... all-conference linebacker in football, helping Walsh Jesuit win regional title ... member of National Honor Society ... father Chip Bok played hockey and football at University of Dayton ... grandfather Art Bok played football at Dayton ... born Oct. 5, 1979, in Dayton, Ohio ... son of Deborah and Chip Bok ... full name is Matthew Aaron Bok ... posted Dean?s List semester in fall of 2001, graduating with economics degree from the College of Arts and Letters.
