  • Matt Weglarz feature story from Irish Eyes (Feb. 16, 2007)

Newcomer to the Irish baseball program who is enrolled in MBA studies at Notre Dame ... graduated from Missouri State in 2006, after playing three healthy seasons with the Bears (he was granted an extra year of eligibility due to foot injury that wiped out his freshman season in '03) ... was able to attend the College World Series in '03, when his MSU teammates (playing as Southwest Missouri at that time) made their spirited run to Omaha ... could play dual key roles in '07, as righthanded power hitter with catching experience (also could DH or play first base) ... his arrival at Notre Dame took on greater importance when senior catcher Sean Gaston (the '05 and '06 starter) was lost for the season due to shoulder surgery ... Notre Dame head coach Dave Schrage had plenty of chances to see Weglarz play, as Schrage's former team (Evansville) was a top Missouri Valley Conference rival of Missouri State ... an all-MVC performer who caught some elite pitchers at MSU (most notably Brett Sinkbeil, who was selected 19th overall in the 2006 MLB draft, by the Florida Marlins) ... a quality catcher with a good arm and plenty of big-game experience ... strong candidate for 2007 Academic All-America honors who received 2006 CoSIDA Academic All-District VII honors before graduating in 2006 with a 3.48 cumulative GPA, as a business major ... named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team in 2005 and '06 ... posted 3.42 GPA in his first semester of MBA classes at Notre Dame ... played during the summer of 2006 in the prestigious wood-bat Cape Cod League, with the Bourne Braves ... hit first home run at the Braves new home field ... was a late addition for the Braves who ppeared in 14 games and made 10 starts at catcher, with a pair of home runs and a double (also 3 RBI, 3 runs, 5 hits, 2 walks, 9 strikeouts and a sacrifice bunt) ... one of his teammates on the Braves, shortstop Ryan Werhle, is an All-America player at Nebraska (the Huskers will face Notre Dame at the 2007 Stetson Invitational) ... played during the summer of 2004 with the Harrisburg (Va.) Turks, earning all-league honors while helping team win the Valley League postseason tournament ... started two games at first base for the victorious Gold team in the 2006 Blue-Gold fall intrasquad series (1-for-6, RBI, R, BB, 2 Ks) ... had a 2-out RBI single in game-2 of the series (the Blue won, 4-3) ... joins sophomore righthander David Phelps (Hazelwood HS) as Missouri natives on 2007 Notre Dame roster (the program's all-time monogram winners include 14 from Missouri) ... other Notre Dame players to wear jersey number 15 include recent centefielder Scott Sollmann and infielder/catcher Javi Sanchez (the shortstop on the 2002 College World Series team).

AT MISSOURI STATE: Batted .293 (154-for- 526) in three healthy seasons ('04-'06) at Missouri State (known as Southwest Missouri prior to '06) ... played for longtime head coach Keith Guttin, who enters 2007 with 841 wins in 24 seasons as the Bears skipper ... other career totals included 103 RBI, 72 runs a .430 slugging pct.
