Most pleasant surprise of 2001 fall practice, when he showed he was ready to compete on the college level .. poised and hard-nosed competitor who reminds Notre Dame coaches of current Irish third baseman/catcher Andrew Bushey ... combines with sophomore Javier Sanchez as top candidates to back up at shortstop ... also could see time at third base, allowing Bushey to move behind the plate with more regularity ... has good hands and a strong throwing arm ... boasts solid offensive ability, with a lefthanded swing ... one of nine freshmen (plus three sophomores) on 15-player Gold team that upset Blue squad in Notre Dame’s annual three-game intrasquad series (during fall of 2001) ... hit opposite-field single to left and scored for 2-0 lead in Gold’s opening win of the series (7-4) ... first New York native to play for the Irish during Paul Mainieri era and first ND baseball player from New York since outfielder Mark Mapes (Painted Post) in 1993-94 (one of the program’s 80 all-time letterwinners from New York, second only to 139 Illinois natives on the all-time roster) ... previous Irish players to wear No. 6 include shortstop Mike Coss (’88-’91) ... could face several former teammates in 2002, including former Long Island Tigers players Brian Trotta (sophomore SS at Villanova), Sal Viscuso (Fairfield) and Dan Cronin (St. John’s) – plus Boston College’s David Preziosi (from Cleveland Forest City summer team).
