Most pleasant surprise of 2001 fall practice, when he
showed he was ready to compete on the college level
.. poised and hard-nosed competitor who reminds Notre
Dame coaches of current Irish third baseman/catcher
Andrew Bushey ... combines with sophomore Javier
Sanchez as top candidates to back up at shortstop ...
also could see time at third base, allowing Bushey to
move behind the plate with more regularity ... has
good hands and a strong throwing arm ... boasts solid
offensive ability, with a lefthanded swing ... one of
nine freshmen (plus three sophomores) on 15-player
Gold team that upset Blue squad in Notre Dame’s annual
three-game intrasquad series (during fall of 2001) ...
hit opposite-field single to left and scored for 2-0
lead in Gold’s opening win of the series (7-4) ... first New York native to play for the Irish during
Paul Mainieri era and first ND baseball player from
New York since outfielder Mark Mapes (Painted Post) in
1993-94 (one of the program’s 80 all-time
letterwinners from New York, second only to 139
Illinois natives on the all-time roster) ... previous
Irish players to wear No. 6 include shortstop Mike
Coss (’88-’91) ... could face several former teammates
in 2002, including former Long Island Tigers players
Brian Trotta (sophomore SS at Villanova), Sal Viscuso
(Fairfield) and Dan Cronin (St. John’s) – plus Boston
College’s David Preziosi (from Cleveland Forest City
summer team).
PREP & PERSONAL: Four-year letterwinner on
baseball and football teams at Poly Prep ... named
all-Ivy Prep League in each of final three seasons,
also earning all-county shortstop honors and team MVP
as senior captain ... hit .510 as a senior (7 HR, 25
RBI) ... played for Long Island Tigers in summer of
2001 ... played in Insley Clark All-Star Game ... a
tight end and punter on football team, helping squad
post undefeated records in his sophomore (conference
champs) and senior seasons ... scored two touchdowns
as a senior ... also played basketball ... hails from
same high school as current Notre Dame football
players Marcus Wilson and JW Jordan ... father Jeffrey
Milsom was a member of the varsity rowing team at
University of Pennsylvania ... cousin Ben Milsom
played football at John Carroll ... born June 2, 1983,
in Charlottesville, Va. ... son of Jeffrey and Susan
Milsom ... full name is Geoffrey Nikolai Milsom ...
enrolled in the First Year of Studies.
